It features lead lines for all four singers reminiscent of the original Temptations recording, with a contemporary a cappella approach to the backgrounds that is still palatable by the avid barbershopper. Also a great piece to showcase your strong treble singers in a high school choral program. Parts are labeled in traditional barbershop style (tenor, lead, baritone, bass) but apply to the SSAA vocal ranges using the standard barbershop clefs (bass clef for alto parts). It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. This is a fabulous song by Pentatonix which I have arranged for four-part (SSAA) a cappella voices, although sometimes the voice parts split. It can be sung with or without the body percussion as I know it's sometimes difficult to do both at the same time!Whilst in the original Pentatonix song, Scott Hoying has most of the solos, I have arranged this so that all voices get the chance to sing the main melody. The bass part is not the most interesting(!) as the whole song is built over a repeating two-bar phrase (four chords). However, in this arrangement, I have managed to give them the main melody at bar 30 and at bar 61 they are the only voice-part to sing Mitch's parting tune - it's the basses' time to shine!I have two versions of this song available. The other version (Product Number 1355563) is easier to sing. If you want a challenge, this is the version you should try! It's as close as I could get to the original.

This setting of the traditional Scottish song of farewell is designed as an 8-part arrangement that male and female quartets or choruses can sing together to finish a joint performance, as well as two separate 4-part arrangements for the respective groups to use when they're not sharing the stage. It was conceived to address the 'cost-per-wear' problem of special occasion pieces that only get performed occasionally but still need rehearsing to the same standard as the rest of the set.This is the setting for women's voices, in which the melody is taken for the most part by female leads, then handed off to the basses for the 3rd phrase of each verse. The first verse is homophonic, while the second explores a variety of melody+accompaniment textures before restoring the harmonic texture to introduce a tag that blossoms out from unison.The versions for men's voicing and combined voicings are also available for purchase.N.B.
