Treble-voice a cappella arrangement of A Thousand Kisses Deep by Leonard Cohen. Gorgeous lines for all four parts, melody appears in different parts for the differnet verses, with subtle counterpoint in the accompanying parts. Dynamics, phrasing and cutoffs all highlight the text. This arrangement follows the form exactly, with a vocalise where the original had an instrumental section. The syllable used is dng; the primary sound is on the ng, a syllable often used for clarifying pitch in choral ensembles. It creates a beautiful bell-like sound when used this way. Extremely fun to sing.

Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. Near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†The beautiful Medieval English text for this piece is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I lines 148-154 in which Julian reflects on the vision she experienced about a hazelnut in the palm of her hand. She comes to understand that God loves even a small, ordinary thing like a hazelnut, such that it will not disintegrate but last forever because of God’s love for it. In Julian’s vision, the hazelnut symbolizes all that is made — all of Creation that God made and loves forever. The music combines Medieval sounds and counterpoint with lush, modern harmonies, woven together with the smooth color and elegant lines of the clarinet. Singers use Original Pronunciation to capture the lyricism of Julian’s words. The Message is written to evoke a feeling of love and happiness in everything one does. The speaker uses nocturnal events to represent life: although the rain (mournful times) is not here, the stars cannot be seen if one is not opening themselves to love and the beauty life offers. The speaker believes the message should be heard by all, so everyone can witness the stars and encourages others to become messengers themselves.Duration: approx. 5:02The Message was selected as a winner in the 2020 MMEA Honors Composition Contest.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Published by OLIVIER COSTA (A0.993444). « AMITIÉ » is a composition of about six minutes long for a women's choir (SSAA). It can also be performed by a male choir (TTBB), in this case the singers must read in octabassa treble clef. This piece sets to music a selection of poems based on friendship, taken from the collection Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d´Orphée by Guillaume Apollinaire. We will hear The cat, The peacock, The owl and The ox. The bond of friendship is symbolized here by an element of percussion: the friction of a metal chain, played by the members of the choir from the beginning to the end of the piece. This implies that the choir must use a stand or sing in pairs, one holding the sheet music and the other playing the string. This work explores different vocal techniques: singing, sliding, timbre play, murmuring, rhythmic speaking, declaiming and shouting. These different modes of vocal play are combined with different compositional techniques such as polyrhythm, homorhythmia, rhythmic irregularity, counterpoint, opposition and layering of sound planes. FRIENDSHIP is the second part of a cycle devoted to the work of Apollinaire.

As cute as a bugs ear, this ultra-happy Christmas ditty by Sia is a true joy. Every theme seems unusually familiar, and they are presented by the lead one at a time, excepting the colour theme which is taken by the basses. The four themes are then masterfully woven together in counterpoint in the last stretch of the arrangement. The tenors have the final post whilst the leads finish their theme and the baritones noodle around them, concluding with a very jazzy, very christmassy baritone solo to polish the arrangement off. This is the perfect ear-worm for your Christmas season!
