A super-jazzy arrangement of this uptempo swing song as sung by Clare Teal, this is one that is fiendishly challenging, but worthy of an attempt by established SSAA a cappella groups who are experienced and confident with the swing genre. The arranger, the late Jen Mills, was an accomplished jazz musician as well as a barbershop singer and LABBS Music Judge. This arrangement has been donated by her partner for publication by LABBS on SMP so that SSAA a cappella groups can experience the joy of this arrangement.This arrangement is NOT suitable for barbershop contest, as the harmony parts are frequently performing non-homorhythmically with neutral syllables, to give a huge hit of big band flavour.The arrangement is predominantly in the barbershop style (melody in the inner voice) but at times the melody gets passed around the other parts too, so everyone gets a turn!With an extended vocal instrumental intro, it would be suitable for a show where a spoken intro overlays the first 30 seconds or so (once the speech is planned, some bars can be repeated as many times as needed to accommodate).For those unfamiliar with the song, look up Clare Teal's performance on YouTube from her album Don't Talk. It is ambiguous as to whether the song is celebrating these qualities or warning us about them, but it certainly refuses to accept hypocrisy on the matter.The arrangement casts the song as a barbershop contest up-tune, and taking harmonic risks that not so many years ago would have been seen as playing with stylistic fire in the BHS system (and probably would still be in SAI as of the time of writing in 2018). Texturally, though, it remains predominantly homophonic so as to let Teal's sparkling lyrics through.It demands sizzling rhythmic skills and an up-for-it attitude, and delivers an exciting ride for singers and audience alike.N.B. The delicate harmonic beauty of this piece is truly stunning. Though short in length, there is immense opportunity for magical expressive moments. With close harmonies weaving in and out of consonances and unisons and flowing passages paired with moments of rhythmic energy, there is so much music to be made. A repeating ending of layered melodies that gradually fades al niente will have your audience holding their breath. Aura Lea (Aura Lee) is a song written in the mid-19th century just prior to the American Civil War.  As a ballad about a maiden it was readily taken up by soldiers on both sides, often being sung around camp fires.The tune is perhaps best known for being used by Elvis Presley in his hit song ‘Love Me Tender’.This arrangement, for ‘a cappella’ SSAA choir, provides some close harmony challenges, although the voice-leading is, in the main, intuitive,  Written mostly in 4 parts, there are the occasional divided voices.

NON-TRADITIONAL MELODY: A great favorite, and a most well-known song among Christmas carols, Joy to the World was not originally written to be a Christmas carol. There were several melodies attached to the poem by Isaac Watts. The traditional version, which has become the most popular, is attributed to Lowell Mason, and is the fourth revised version. The first part of the tune in the popular version is similar to pieces by George Frideric Handel, and the melody for the second part is Lowell Mason's. Presented herein is a fifth version (maybe there are more!). If one of Handel's rousing pieces could be used for the first part of the song, why not another? I have used the Handel's Overture to the Music for the Royal Fireworks for the first part of the song, and have kept Lowell Mason's rousing ending. Please enjoy. Also available for SATB. ASCAP.
