The delicate harmonic beauty of this piece is truly stunning. Though short in length, there is immense opportunity for magical expressive moments. With close harmonies weaving in and out of consonances and unisons and flowing passages paired with moments of rhythmic energy, there is so much music to be made. A repeating ending of layered melodies that gradually fades al niente will have your audience holding their breath. IMPORTANT NOTE: this arrangement must be performed using an iPhone and very small (4x4x1.5) cordless (bluetooth), battery powered BOSE speaker for the pre-recorded motorcycle, etc. FX sounds. The speaker would be velcro'd(?) to a very small, detachable, shelf attached to the mic stand, close as possible to the mic. These shelves can be inexpensively purchased. It would (of course) be attached prior to the performance. One of the singers holds the iPhone (concealed) and triggers (starts/stops) the FX track. The track doesn't have to be stopped until you exit the stage,... as long as there's nothing else on the track!!! The iPhone must be on silent mode, of course! Quartets and choruses singing at a B- contest level should be able to successfully learn and perform this arrangement making good use of the available excellent part-predominant vocal Learning Trax <www.larrywrightmusic.com>. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. Published by Awelia Music (A0.1290533). From the arranger: I first came across this traditional English folk ballad on the podcast mini-series “Dolly Parton’s Americaâ€. Dolly’s version was fast-based and up-beat, but the melody struck me as distant yet clear, mournful yet timeless. When I could not find a version that let the voice further explore these qualities, I made my own. The first exists on my record (WALLFLOWER by Aerhart), the second as a live solo act accompanied by a Yamaha Reface CS Synth, and the third as a Silver Dagger choral arrangement, made with and for the Young New Yorker's Chorus Treble Ensemble. The original Silver Dagger tune is a haunting memory in its spirit as much as its history (its many possible origins trace back to the early 1800s). To this day, we wonder whether it’s love, fear or both that sway our overprotected heroine’s decision to “sleep alone all of my life.†Despite her careful consideration, the melody never grants the finality of her decision. This arrangement holds this dissonance within a meditative space - a small moment of stillness in which to let all the big thoughts and emotions come and go. We begin with the memory of the melody, gather momentum and clarity in its pulsing visceral storytelling, then release it, unresolved yet somehow changed.
