It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. These poems seem well-suited to musical settings for Men's Chorus. The deep tones. The sonority of male voices (perhaps speaking for the poet) rising in song.Throughout the varied imagery of this poetry -- the depth of the sea, the dark of the night, the tumult of passion and the acceptance of death -- there speaks one, central message. English.This setting of ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime was created for the Manitou Singers of St. Olaf College and their conductor, Dr. Therees Tkach Hibbard. I was asked to re-arrange my SATB setting of the same tune and text (published by earthsongs) but could not come up with a workable solution. Instead, I started over with a setting for accompanied treble choir and viola knowing the skill and musicianship of violist Dr. Charles Gray, Professor of Music (Viola, Violin, String Literature and Pedagogy). Three tunes are incorporated in this arrangement: Une Jeune Pucelle; Vom Himmel Hoch; and, Veni, Emmanuel. The first tune, Une Jeune Pucelle, is the ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime melody, and first appears in fragments within the opening viola solo. The second theme, Vom Himmel Hoch, is found in the viola part in measure 30, and implies the text, “From heaven above to earth I come To bear good news to every home; Glad tidings of great joy I bring, Whereof I now will say and sing...†which matches the unfolding drama of the ‘Twas in the Moon story. The third tune, Veni, Emmanuel, comes in response to the viola solo with the interjection: “Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel, shall come to you, O Israel.â€.

Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.1040536). 'Do As You Will' is a folksy, Celtic feel choral song arranged for SSAA -with harp, flute, fiddle, and accordion accompaniment. Its shifting tonality adds complexity. The lyric is female point of view: Do As You Will Once I had a soldier lad who swore he’d love me truly. Ah! But now those days are gone! When the battle raged he turned his heel and followed duly. I gave him the salute and soldiered on. SSAA A Cappella arrangement.When I came to make an SSA arrangement of this, It was obvious to me that the bass part was such an important part of the arrangement, that it had to somehow stay there. It just didn't fit for an Alto 2, so I put it in as Sop 2, putting it up an octave, with a couple of minor adjustments. It sounds a bit like a descant, but it's always needed for the harmomies. I think it works well!

NON-TRADITIONAL MELODY: A great favorite, and a most well-known song among Christmas carols, Joy to the World was not originally written to be a Christmas carol. There were several melodies attached to the poem by Isaac Watts. The traditional version, which has become the most popular, is attributed to Lowell Mason, and is the fourth revised version. The first part of the tune in the popular version is similar to pieces by George Frideric Handel, and the melody for the second part is Lowell Mason's. Presented herein is a fifth version (maybe there are more!). If one of Handel's rousing pieces could be used for the first part of the song, why not another? I have used the Handel's Overture to the Music for the Royal Fireworks for the first part of the song, and have kept Lowell Mason's rousing ending. Please enjoy. Also available for SATB. ASCAP.

This beloved Christmas hymn was composed in 1847 by Adolphe Adam, using a poem by Placide Cappeau. The piece has quite a history due to the religious affilliations (or lack thereof) of the two, and of wording not agreeing with the Catholic church, among other things. The song has survived all of that, and is beloved by most, as well as being a personal favorite. I have taken some liberties with the lyrics and the meter to bring this piece to you. Published by Keep Calm and Keep Singing (A0.843718). A fishing song from the North East of England, this became popular as the theme tune to 1970’s TV show When the Boat Comes In. However, there is also another melody (in the minor key) also believed to originate from the North East but which was collected by Cecil Sharp in Berkshire. I have combined both melodies giving one to the sops and the other to the altos. Each section then forms an ostinato accompaniment while the other is singing the tune. These “Dance†“Sing†notes although written as dotted minims are to be performed short and light – like bells. The song also works best with a slight northern accent – particularly the short northern ‘a’ vowel on the word Dance and in the phrase “When the boat comes inâ€. NB Although this is written for 4 parts the second alto is optional and the arrangement works just as well without it for SSA choirs.
