It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. The music is also nocturnal and atmospheric. The chorus sings I love you, as if calling back and forth across the Harlem rooftops. A change of pace follows in the middle of the piece: Down in the street, a band is playing... Scat singing, percussive vocal effects and random patterns of I love you bring this work to a close.

This piece is based on text that I wrote several years ago. As a lover of the horror genre I have always had a fascination with the romantic creature known in modern culture as the vampire. I imagined in my mind the interaction between a mortal and an immortal creature. How would the mortal describe a romantic encounter with this creature that exists in the shadows, untouched by time? I used descriptive text to communicate the visceral details of this experience and make the listener create in their mind how the experience would have felt if they had experienced it. The encounter is intense, and painful but once it ends the narrator feels empty and only has a mysterious melody to keep as a memory. I set the text for treble voices because I felt that the close harmonies I could accomplish with voices in the same register would lend itself well to the imagery. The piece is lush and smooth when the text demands it and sharp and angular when the text calls for that sound. Once the interaction is over, the voices break off into an aleatoric section in which each voice sings the phrase Songs only bones can hear fading away into nothingness just as the text suggests the vampire moves into the velvet void.

This is a fabulous song by Pentatonix which I have arranged for four-part (SSAA) a cappella voices, although sometimes the voice parts split. It can be sung with or without the body percussion as I know it's sometimes difficult to do both at the same time!Whilst in the original Pentatonix song, Scott Hoying has most of the solos, I have arranged this so that all voices get the chance to sing the main melody. The bass part is not the most interesting(!) as the whole song is built over a repeating two-bar phrase (four chords). However, in this arrangement, I have managed to give them the main melody at bar 30 and at bar 61 they are the only voice-part to sing Mitch's parting tune - it's the basses' time to shine!I have two versions of this song available. The other version (Product Number 1355563) is easier to sing. If you want a challenge, this is the version you should try! It's as close as I could get to the original.

It is in the original key of Eb major, so if you already know the song it is a very familiar sing-along in a familiar place for the voice. The melody starts with Sopranos while Altos provide rhythmic accompaniment. As the song develops the melody splits into 3 and then 4 part harmony, with the tune taken by different parts here and there. Soprano 1s have a soaring descant over the tune towards the end. (Top note G a twelfth above middle C for a short while)SAB and TTBB soon to follow. .

It is a beautiful song and will go down a storm at concerts. My choirs loved singing this too! The melody is shared mainly between Soprano 1 and Alto 1 but is full of interest for the other parts. It is also available for SSAT and SSAB. You can hear the parts on the youtube link and see for yourself if it will be suitable for your singers. I would put the level of this arrangement at easy to intermediate and suitable for community and other types of non-auditioned choirs as well as for auditioned choirs.

Well suited for mid-sized groups and chamber choirs to larger groups. Tempo is slower than performance tempo for the sake of learning/MIDIs (you might choose 130 or even 140 for performance). SSAA, piano, flute and bassoon / 6 minI was taken in by the story in the poem “Tree-Burial†by William Cullen Bryant, a 19th century American romantic poet - about a Native American ritual of burying a child high among the trees rather than in the ground. This ritual and the words spoken seem a powerful balm in the face of grief and sadness. The text reflects the mother’s tenderness to the child - sorrowful but loving and beautiful. I found the poem in a collection of “Poems About Trees,†celebrating sacred groves, wild woodlands, and bountiful orchards, paying lyrical tribute to these majestic beings with whom we share the earth.Composed for women’s voices, the flute and bassoon add a doleful fullness to this piece.
