This classic jazz standard My Funny Valentine pays tribute to the great tradition of vocal jazz soloists like Sarah Vaughan and Chet Baker by featuring up to five separate melodic solos throughout the piece, as well as a possible improvisation section of 16 measures to be split up among instrumental soloists (or vocalists if you prefer, but probably not desirable in most cases!). Treble ensemble vocals mostly fill the role of background vocalists with the exception of a rubato a cappella bridge section after solos, but splits into four parts much of the time for a lush and rich sound from your singers. Glenn Miller and his orchestra recorded the tune several times, with a 1942 version reaching number two on the US Billboard pop music chart.In 1960, rhythm and blues singer Etta James recorded an arrangement by Riley Hampton that improvised on Warren's original melody. Etta James' rendition became the title track on her debut album At Last! (1960) and was eventually inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.This arrangement was commissioned by a ladies' choir for SSAA but is also available as an SATB arrangement (with one bass split at the very end). Although quite chromatic, with a key change before the final verse, this arrangement has been performed by amateur choirs.

Latin.Raimund Wippermann, born in 1956, studied church and school music in Cologne and Düsseldorf as well as choral conducting at the Stockholm Music Academy. Since 2004 he has been director of the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. The longing of the believing individual for God's presence in our world in speech and music and making it 'sing' in the end – this is the intention on which this piece is based. In this spirit, the old Advent hymn 'Veni, veni, Emmanuel' is combined here with linguistic and musical expressions of our time. The improvising singing will certainly be delightful for singers of all age groups after initial difficulties. The choral setting with its largely modal harmony is not complicated; however, the singers should have some experience in sustaining dissonances. The piece is ideal to approach sacred evening music in the Advent season, leading to quiet and calm.
