Think of the story behind this music as about a young lady who  just loves the waltz, and loves to sing and dance to its lilting triple time.  Her dancing partner is a dashing, ever so handsome young man, who sweeps her off her feet and takes her breath away with his charm and grace, as they float away on the wings of A Dance In Triple Time!I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for my chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise.We always enjoyed singing this little piece for our audiences. And they always enjoyed hearing it. One caveat; The lyrics go by quickly! Leads, use your best diction and pronunciation, so the story doesn't get lost. Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.The metronome marks more accurately describe the accelerandos and broadenings. On the repeat at 11, a slight increase in the tempo will add urgency and intensity. Keep the melody prominent as it moves to different voices, beginning at 37. There is a new modulation in the middle that gives a nice lift to the arrangement. The arrangement is not too difficult at all and most groups would be able to learn it very quickly. The arrangement is a cappella with the singers snapping throughout. But a Bass and Drums could be easily added to give an even cooler groove to it (the Bass could just double the lowest vocal part). It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords. It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024. This piece is based on text that I wrote several years ago. As a lover of the horror genre I have always had a fascination with the romantic creature known in modern culture as the vampire. I imagined in my mind the interaction between a mortal and an immortal creature. How would the mortal describe a romantic encounter with this creature that exists in the shadows, untouched by time? I used descriptive text to communicate the visceral details of this experience and make the listener create in their mind how the experience would have felt if they had experienced it. The encounter is intense, and painful but once it ends the narrator feels empty and only has a mysterious melody to keep as a memory. I set the text for treble voices because I felt that the close harmonies I could accomplish with voices in the same register would lend itself well to the imagery. The piece is lush and smooth when the text demands it and sharp and angular when the text calls for that sound. Once the interaction is over, the voices break off into an aleatoric section in which each voice sings the phrase Songs only bones can hear fading away into nothingness just as the text suggests the vampire moves into the velvet void.

Just as the famous painter creates literary images with his letters and knows how to visualize landscapes and frames of mind, the award-winning composer knows how to musically capture such moods and atmospheres. His composition for two- to four-part women's choir (SSAA) and piano lives on dynamic nuances, changes of time, chromaticism and triplet figures as well as harp-like arpeggios which give the work a mystical quality. Due to its chord progressions with great chromaticism, the choral part of this c. 4-minute work contains some intonational obstacles which are worth negotiating while holding out the prospect of a unique sound experience.
