Inspired by the 1,116 orphaned Polish children who, as Holocaust survivors, were brought to Canada after World War II and became known as The Redeemed Children. These tunes, and others like them, were the only possessions they had and their only direct connection to the past. I received a copy of a book of tunes (unarranged) while speaking at a conference; an elderly gentlemen came up to me, pressed them into my hands and asked me to help keep them alive. The work features two tunes, both on the theme of motherhood. The first tune describes a young mother shushing everything around her so that her little son can sleep. The second tune rejoices when the poor are raised up and a barren woman's house is filled with the laughter of children.To honour the integrity of the tunes, this work features idiomatic writing and harmonies and captures not only the rhythm but also the intended mood and sentiment. Brief solo opportunities feature a soprano and alto in a traditional 'cantor' style section. This is an accompanied SSAA arrangement of the up-beat Act 1 finale Bright New Day from the 1983 musical Blood Brothers.This arrangement has a short intro based on the transition in the original musical and then contains all 6 versus of the original song. The melody alternates between the sopranos and altos and there is some call and response in the later versus. The highest note in the soprano 1 part is top Ab5 and lowest note in alto 2 part is F3.Blood Brothers tells the nature versus nurture story of twin brothers separated at birth in 1960's Liverpool and, with the brothers growing up at opposite ends of the social spectrum. Bright New Day is about one of the brothers and his mother moving from the condemned inner-city slums of Liverpool to a new council house in the nearby town of Skelmersdale during the early 1970's, before he meets his brother by chance again.

Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale A setting of an excerpt of RÃo de La Plata en lluvia from Mascarilla y Trébol (1938) by Alfonsina Storni (1938) Copyright © 2020 Adrienne Inglis Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas. Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. [The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city, with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.] Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over RÃo de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dÊ’] sound and llanto begins with the [Ê’] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both. Following its release, the song became an instant hit with music fans in North America.In September 2018, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli released a classically flavoured English/Italian version of the song recorded with his son Matteo. Matteo wrote the Italian and additional English lyrics for this recording, in collaboration with Fortunato Zampaglione. This version of the song features in the end credits of the Disney film, The Nutcracker and The Four Realms.In 2019 A Great Big World recorded their own version of Fall on Me in collaboration with American singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera. The song is the duo's second collaboration with Aguilera, following the single Say Something, which peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 in 2013.Fall on Me (the original version) is a beautifully poignant song that seemingly beckons for the divine influence of a higher spiritual power in the search for love. The Bocelli version incorporates an additional sentiment - the bond between parent and child. Andrea Bocelli said of this version, Anyone who is a parent, anyone who knows the precious responsibility of being a mother or a father, will fully grasp the meaning of this piece. It is his first duet with his son Matteo.This arrangement, for SSAA choir with piano accompaniment, is based on the Andrea and Matteo Bocelli version. I found the poem in a collection of “Poems About Trees,†celebrating sacred groves, wild woodlands, and bountiful orchards, paying lyrical tribute to these majestic beings with whom we share the earth.Composed for women’s voices, the flute and bassoon add a doleful fullness to this piece. A Beautiful and Haunting Traditional Welsh Song - with English lyricsMyfanwy tells the tragic story of the unfulfilled love of a poor young poet for a beautiful young noblewoman who lived in Dinas Bran castle. The remains of the castle stand above the Welsh town of Llangollen and is the scene setting for the sad love story of Myfanwy. It was first published in 1875.The song has featured in many films and television programmes and has been sung by almost, if not every single Welsh male voice choir. In modern times, it is still a favourite as sung by Cerys Mathews, and Bryn Terfel and is also sung without exception at every Welsh Rugby Union international in the National Stadium, Cardiff.This arrangement for SSAA was requested by a singer in an English female vocal group. It was her Mother's favourite song. The lyrics have been translated to English although the original Welsh lyrics are shown on the last page. The melody is sung by Soprano 2. Â Soprano 1 sings in harmony above the melody although joins the melody at the beginning of each verse.

The German-language text is borrowed from an old Latin Christmas carol, singing of the miracle of Nativity in two verses. Eccard manages, in an engaging manner, to musically express the joyous atmosphere of this poem. All four female voices (SSAA) join imitatively in the angelic chant of joy one after the other, while central words like 'freudenreich' [joyful], 'Himmelreich' [kingdom of heaven], 'Jungfrau' [virgin] or 'Mutter' [mother] are particularly embellished. This is exhilarating and easy-to-perform utility music for Christmas church services.
