The song tells a story of a hard-working blue-collar woman, based on inspiration Summer found after the 25th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony (23 Feb 1983) when she attended an after-party. She encountered a restroom attendant named Onetta Johnson (whose name is mentioned in the song) whom she found sound asleep - despite a blaring TV - exhausted from working long hours. Summer related the story in an interview: I looked at her and my heart just filled up with compassion for this lady, and I thought to myself: God, she works hard for the money, cooped up in this stinky little room all night. Then I thought about it, and I said, She works hard for the money... She works hard for the money...This is it! This is it! I know this is it! The arrangement opens with an a cappella introduction in full harmony. The melody moves between the altos and sopranos, with each part otherwise providing rhythmic support (echoing the instrumental accompaniment). The sopranos divide into 3 parts occasionally, allowing some high voices (A-flat) to shine. There are no solos in this arrangement -- your women all have opportunity to sing this powerful, true story that serves more broadly as an allegory for women's rights and socioeconomic hardship. It was released as a single in mid-1980 in both the UK and the USA. In that year the song made it to No. 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and to No. 11 on the UK singles chart.The song was written by Jeff Lynne specifically for the 1980 feature film Xanadu. It appeared in a sequence with the film’s stars Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, and Michael Beck. Following its release, the song became an instant hit with music fans in North America.In September 2018, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli released a classically flavoured English/Italian version of the song recorded with his son Matteo. Matteo wrote the Italian and additional English lyrics for this recording, in collaboration with Fortunato Zampaglione. This version of the song features in the end credits of the Disney film, The Nutcracker and The Four Realms.In 2019 A Great Big World recorded their own version of Fall on Me in collaboration with American singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera. German.Heinrich Poos is not the first composer inspired by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's poem 'Die Auferstehung', as even Gustav Mahler had already used these verses in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony 'Auferstehung'. Mahler was inspired to use a choral movement at the end of his symphony at the funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow where a choir sang a chorale based on said text by Klopstock. Heinrich Poos wrote his deeply moving choral piece in remembrance of the organist Hubert Schoonbrodt.

This feisty song has a latin feel, with a catchy spanish chorus and shows Kirsty Maccoll's great sense of humour. Singers will really enjoy the interplay of the parts and the chance to mimic mariachi band trumpets! Kirsty Maccoll said the song was about 'being a fashion victim and crippling yourself in the process' but it is also very sexy and fun.  While Maccoll didnt have much chart success herself with it, it has been used in TV and film and was covered by Bette Midler on her album Bette in 2000.

Following its release, the song became an instant hit with music fans in North America.In September 2018, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli released a classically flavoured English/Italian version of the song recorded with his son Matteo. Matteo wrote the Italian and additional English lyrics for this recording, in collaboration with Fortunato Zampaglione. This version of the song features in the end credits of the Disney film, The Nutcracker and The Four Realms.In 2019 A Great Big World recorded their own version of Fall on Me in collaboration with American singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera. The song is the duo's second collaboration with Aguilera, following the single Say Something, which peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 in 2013Fall on Me (the original version) is a beautifully poignant song that seemingly beckons for the divine influence of a higher spiritual power in the search for love. The Bocelli version incorporates an additional sentiment - the bond between parent and child. Andrea Bocelli said of this version, Anyone who is a parent, anyone who knows the precious responsibility of being a mother or a father, will fully grasp the meaning of this piece. It is his first duet with his son Matteo.This a cappella arrangement for SSAA choir is based on the version by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera.
