This setting of the traditional Scottish song of farewell is designed as an 8-part arrangement that male and female quartets or choruses can sing together to finish a joint performance, as well as two separate 4-part arrangements for the respective groups to use when they're not sharing the stage. It was conceived to address the 'cost-per-wear' problem of special occasion pieces that only get performed occasionally but still need rehearsing to the same standard as the rest of the set.This is the setting for women's voices, in which the melody is taken for the most part by female leads, then handed off to the basses for the 3rd phrase of each verse. The first verse is homophonic, while the second explores a variety of melody+accompaniment textures before restoring the harmonic texture to introduce a tag that blossoms out from unison.The versions for men's voicing and combined voicings are also available for purchase.N.B. American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Arranged for solo female voice, SSAA choir and piano, this is a song of hope, the hope of a girl to escape the workhouse during the Irish Famine years and to travel to make a new life in Australia. At the time the British Crown was encouraging girls to emigrate as a means to redress the gender balance in the colonies – there were too many men and not enough women. Over four thousand young women took this journey between 1848 and 1850. The composer Brendan Graham expressed his own hope that this song might have significance for the descendants of those girls, many of whom were present at the song’s first performance in 2012 at the Irish Famine Commemoration in Sydney.

An uplifting song arranged by members of the LABBS Music Judging Category in 4 part close harmony for women's voicings, in the barbershop style (internal melody). Sticking fairly close to the original, the arrangement features solos of each voicepart on the melody, and rousing homophonic choruses. The standard tag builds to a satisfying climax, with an optional extended tag that sends it through the roof!
The arrangement is suitable for most female barbershop choruses and quartets as a fun, fairly quick learn for performance repertoire. Each voicepart is well within the standard barbershop ranges of most arrangements (Basses: low E, one low D has an alternate note offered). Note: if you are unfamiliar with the scoring of female barbershop music, be aware the bass clef should be sung an octave higher than written, as designated by the 8 above the clef.
This arrangement is not suitable for use in barbershop contests.
This song and arrangement would also be a great choice for other genres of female choirs and a cappella quartets or ensembles, including high school / college / secondary school choirs wanting to try the barbershop style. It is a fun and modern song containing a strong and poignant message about not bending to peer pressure and being your own person and remaining true to yourself.
