The lively 'Upon a Peal of Bells' is followed by the smooth and slow moving 'The Snail'. The dramatic 'Sunset' leads to the humorous 'The Hen', with cackles a-plenty! Two movements are also published separately (as a pair) titled 'The Snail and the Hen' - also available on this site. Alan Bullard’s choral works are performed worldwide, and many have been recorded and broadcast. He has a growing reputation for music that choirs enjoy performing, and which speaks directly to audiences. Published by Victor Rebullida (A0.1021515). I wrote the work entitled Pie Jesu after attending an essay by the vocal ensemble Enchiriadis to which I had been invited. Listening to these women made such an impression on me that I abandoned that essay for the firm purpose of writing a work for their voices. I chose this text of the Mass of Requiem because of its simplicity not devoid of innocence and considered it suitable for the technical and expressive goodness of this formation. In this way I created this Pie Jesu in which the serene character of homophonies that progress as melodies demanding from the whole a perfect tuning and timbre homogeneity in all registers, without neglecting a subtle dynamic and expressive nuance. For the management of copyright the work is registered with the SGAE (Copyright Management Society of Spain) The score contains the data of the work and the composer for the management of Rights. The author will appreciate being informed of any interpretation of the work.

It is based on a folk tale his father used to use in his sermons, in which a buzzard takes various animals for a ride before throwing them to the ground and eating them for dinner. A monkey observes this, and goes for a ride, but surprises the buzzard wrapping his tail round the bird's neck and refusing to be thrown off.The song's rhythmic feel is both cool and dry. The laid-back swing feel gives a sense of authority in the way the monkey takes control of the situation, but the syncopations and chromatic licks also remind us that in folk tales, the monkey is the trickster, even when he's on the side of the righteous. The composition creates a mystical effect through its long phrases, immersing the listener in a reverent silence that invites remembrance of deceased loved ones, friends, and acquaintances, as well as tragic events. The requiem was created for the open-air theater production 'Bauernkrieg 1653' in commemoration of the armed conflict in Switzerland between the peasants and the authoritarian rule of the cities. The fact that the requiem was written for a women's choir expresses that often women are the ones who suffer the most as survivors.
