David McKeown #6070221. Published by David McKeown (A0.589440). Stand by Me was originally released by the co-writer Ben E King in 1960 and is the sixth highest royalty earning song of all time. However, King never intended to record the song himself. The story goes he had some studio time left over after a session and the producer asked him if he had any other songs they could put on tape. When King sat at the piano and performed Stand by Me, the producer recognised a huge hit in the making. This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The overall performance time is around three minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills and expressive playing. There are some complex syncopated rhythms in the melody part and the challenge will be to tie these expressively to the repeating bass pattern which is present throughout. Merengue Tipico bands maintain the traditional instrumentation of the double-headed tambora drum, güira, accordion and vocal, while urban bands in the North American diaspora often add saxophone, bass and other percussion. The Merengue dance became hugely popular in the 1950s and new forms continue to draw audiences around the world.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady quintilla tambora rhythm is present throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style. The main challenge is the fast tempo and melodies should be clearly articulated. Merengue de MerlÃn has a performance time of around two and a half minutes at full tempo. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals.
