This piece is a Showstopper! Rock-a-My-Soul is a Choral piece based on the traditional folk/gospel/spiritual. I originally envisioned this piece for a Middle School Choir, but it works well with any group that wants to have fun. It is written in 3 part Treble clef which the conductor may assign as they see fit for their choir and performance. (Part 3 works very well with male voices.) Parts all stay within an octave from Middle C to C above. This lively version uses many styles of jazz to drive this piece, yet there is also a recurring descending third ostinato which is the rocking comfort this piece imparts. The piano part plays an important role in driving this piece and setting the moods. Each of the seven sections shifts the mood and jazz style but maintains a level of energy. After completing the jazz arrangements of the traditional chorus I tried various ways to extend the piece. One day while working on this piece I saw a news clip about another school bullying incident. I immediately made the connection -- at its heart Rock-a-My-Soul is really about overcoming obstacles to find comfort and acceptance. So I wrote some additional lyrics to create an anti-bullying, anti-depression section. I have soloists deliver the main lines to make it personal and invitational then the choir backs them up, call and response style, with Everything's gonna be alright. Lyrics throughout are all carefully worded so that the song may be used for either secular or sacred purposes. The context and location where it is sung will flesh out the implied and intended meaning. If sung in school it means you have friends here who accept you; if sung in your place of worship then it means that your God accepts you.Simple power, beauty and meaning all wrapped in joyous jazz!13 page score, 4:00 minute performancerecording is various excerpts of the accompaniment to show different stylistic sections

When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances. We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the following who made this work possible: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Liebowitz of Dayton, Ohio who sponsored the commissioning of this work; Rabbi Jack Riemer, the board of directors and the members of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Dayton, Ohio for their support and help in many projects of the Youth Chorale; the devoted and hard working members of the Beth Abraham Youth Chorale who gave birth to this work and who, through their many unique accomplishments, have carried the message to their community and to communities throughout the United States that Jewish youth is indeed vibrant and very much alive. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. The Vocal Percussion (Beatboxing) should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with much of the groove and vibe it needs.The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. As a general rule, the melody or lead should be strongest, followed by any harmony parts (those with lyrics), followed by any background parts (Mmm's / Dmm's, etc).RHYTHM & BASS:This Beatboxing part is suitable for medium level vocal percussionists, and is made up of groupings of patterns. A popular version of this carol by Karl Leuner (originally called Wiegenlied, written in 1813) and arranged by Charles Macpherson (1870-1927) is published in Carols for Choirs 1 for SATB choir. However, with the lack of tenors and basses in many parish churches, the carol can often lie beyond the ability of many. Hence this arrangement for three-part choir: the range of the baritone part is from low A to high E flat, which should be achievable by most men (or women singing lower parts) in amateur choirs. Being such a beautiful, gentle and touching carol, this arrangement retains its original, simple a cappella nature, although a piano reduction is provided for practice purposes.

Monsell, an English poet, was written to the tune of the German song, Wie Lieblich Ist Der Maien by Johann Steurlein. This arrangement is for an Intermediate SAB (soprano, alto, bass) Choir with a piano accompaniment. It is appropriate as an anthem and processional, particularly for Thanksgiving, but appreciated in worship services and programs year round. In simple, vivid language derived from biblical images in Psalm 65, these verses thank the Lord for a bountiful harvest and offer God the harvest of our lives. The tune was composed in 1575, and it reflects the close harmonies of moving melody lines popular in the 16th Century. The second verse provides an optional opportunity for singing a cappello. A separate sheet for voices is provided along with the score.

The Heart It Is a Strange Beast examines the conflict that occurs between the logic of the brain and the emotion of the heart when it comes to one's romantic endeavors. The piece is written for Three Part Choir with woodwind, bass guitar, and simple percussion accompaniment. There are a lot of complex rhythms and at times the voice parts are almost polyphonic. The piece also explores the Dorian mode which is a rather rare key for modern performances. Even though this piece is challenging it is very fun to play and has a lot of educational potential for intermediate level groups.The piece by Mark Lewis was written with Men's Ensemble in mind but its range is such that any three part ensemble could probably perform it. The music in written in treble clef for ease of reading. Clarinet is the preferred woodwind instrument but sheet music has been included for C, Bb, and Eb instruments. Bass guitar is preferred but any bass instrument would work well for the bass line and the percussion parts are also intended to be easy to play on multiple different types of percussion instruments.
