The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. An instrumental introduction leads to the choir section agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. An instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. Arrangements for other ensembles are also available (Vocal Solo, SSA, SATB) as well as separate versions featuring the addition of Solo Violin, Flute, Oboe or Clarinet and soloist with chorus. Dumbarton's Drums speaks to the love of a woman, which is probably returned by the man, but we're never entirely sure (unless I'm being cynical). The melody is lovely and soft. While this arrangement maintains the simplicity of the melody, it explores several moods in odd key changes. Most of the keys change logically, although they may need more rehearsal than the different verses. This was performed very successful by a community chorus in which two women regularly sang tenor, so the depth of the sound was never compromised.

A short, attractive setting of Psalm 121 for three-part (SABar) choir and piano. It is written with parish choirs in mind (with their abundance of soprano and alto voices, but relative lack of male voices!), and consists of three sections. The first part presents the richly harmonised piano accompaniment in the form of a ritornello and the principal, rising melody from the choir, looking to the mountains for an answer to life's challenges and asking from where shall come my help? The second section presents short, pithy phrases sung by each voice separately expressing different ways in which God comes to their aid. The initial melody and accompaniment, repeating the first lines of the psalm, finally return in an altered form (both harmonically and melodically), and the setting ends with a celebration of confidence in the Lord who made heaven and earth.

The piece begins by establishing a traditional Celtic setting with sustained fifths that evolve and transform as they underscore the haunting melody. A short and effective aleatoric section gives each singer freedom to enter with the mystical melody at various times until all voices merge and sustain the final pitch. The harmonies created by the technique are sublime. The piece builds to a crescendo as the sopranos soar high supported by elegant harmonies. Finally, the piece ends with voices again entering at separate times to sing the final word. As with the rhythmic structure, the harmony is also reconsidered. Sonorities from related tonalities appear, providing new colors to enhance the well-known theme. The choral parts are attractive and singable, with a little alto divisi and each part having a turn at the melody. Suitable for an intermediate to intermediate/advanced choir. There are two difficulties in composing that song: 1. It must show a magnificent marching spirit, at the sametime it must also express grief and resentment. 2. It is not easy to arange the long and short sentences in a reasonable chorus for the repeated melody. On November 11, 2018, it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Leaders of various countries gathered in Paris, France to hold a celebration. I guess, none words of any speakers of that meeting will have more vitality than Du Fu’s <Chariot Marching> to the future history, simply because Life is short. Art is long.

John Newton, 1725 - 1807, author of Amazing Grace, also wrote, How Tedious and Tasteless the Hours. The hymn tune is GREEN FIELDS, and depending on the hymnal or other source in which you find it, opinions vary about who originally composed it. Most, I believe, will call it an Early American Melody, but some attribute it to J. S. Bach, and say that it is found in his Peasant Cantata. However, I listened to the entire Peasant Cantata recently to see if that true, and, although I did hear fragments in one aria that sounded reminiscent of GREEN FIELDS, it seems a bit of a stretch to me to say that the hymn tune has its original version in Bach's cantata. If someone can point me to the portion of the cantata where Bach gives us a clearly identifiable early version, I would be very appreciative. Bach is essentially my favorite composer, and I wouldn't mind attributing the origin of this and many other great melodies to him. -Richard Barber
