This piece is a Showstopper! Rock-a-My-Soul is a Choral piece based on the traditional folk/gospel/spiritual. I originally envisioned this piece for a Middle School Choir, but it works well with any group that wants to have fun. It is written in 3 part Treble clef which the conductor may assign as they see fit for their choir and performance. (Part 3 works very well with male voices.) Parts all stay within an octave from Middle C to C above. This lively version uses many styles of jazz to drive this piece, yet there is also a recurring descending third ostinato which is the rocking comfort this piece imparts. The piano part plays an important role in driving this piece and setting the moods. Each of the seven sections shifts the mood and jazz style but maintains a level of energy. After completing the jazz arrangements of the traditional chorus I tried various ways to extend the piece. One day while working on this piece I saw a news clip about another school bullying incident. I immediately made the connection -- at its heart Rock-a-My-Soul is really about overcoming obstacles to find comfort and acceptance. So I wrote some additional lyrics to create an anti-bullying, anti-depression section. I have soloists deliver the main lines to make it personal and invitational then the choir backs them up, call and response style, with Everything's gonna be alright. Lyrics throughout are all carefully worded so that the song may be used for either secular or sacred purposes. The context and location where it is sung will flesh out the implied and intended meaning. If sung in school it means you have friends here who accept you; if sung in your place of worship then it means that your God accepts you.Simple power, beauty and meaning all wrapped in joyous jazz!13 page score, 4:00 minute performancerecording is various excerpts of the accompaniment to show different stylistic sections

This charming 3-Part choir arrangement is a quodlibet of three traditional songs about rain: Rain, Rain, Go Away; It's Raining, It's Pouring; and Pitter Patter Raindrops. It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs are sung at the same time. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Suitable for elementary aged students (range E4-D5), and perfect for a fall (autumn), spring, or early summer concert, or classroom instruction. Approximate performance time 1:40. Tim Riley specialises in creating compelling works of intermediate difficult for Community Choirs with mixed ability singers. In 1839, 4,000 Chartists marched on Newport in Gwent, Wales, UK. They were part of the Chartist movement, campaigning for better voting right for all. Unarmed, apart from sticks, they arrived at the Westgate Hotel in Newport where they demanded the release of a political prisoner being held there. Local militia opened fire. Twenty two protestors were killed and a further fifty injured. The leaders of the march were sentenced to be 'hanged, drawn and quartered'. Although the march ended in tragedy, most of their demands for universal suffrage are now enshrined in the laws of most democratic societies across the world. The music has been composed in a style that many will find reminiscent of Les Miserable, but there are also touches of Lloyd Webber, Kurt Weill and Gilbert and Sullivan. This arrangement is ideal for community choirs and is a SAAB arrangement. There are two alto parts, but the lower alto part could easily be taken by tenors to give a SATB arrangement. This piece was originally composed and arranged for the Insole Court Community Choir in South Wales (near where the Chartist March took place). In May 2022, the Insole Court Community Choir competed at the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts with Tim Riley conducting and won the Musical Theatre section with this work. I entered into a composition competition in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2014. It was a part of something called the F​ estival of Love​ p​resented by Southbank in London, a festival celebrating the enactment of the Same Sex Couple Act in the United Kingdom. This issue is close to my heart as my partner is from the UK and we are as gay as a row of rainbow striped teepees.During the festival, members of the public passing through Southbank Centre were asked to write down a couple of sentences about something they love. Those texts were then posted on the internet and composers were invited over a period of just 24 hours, to set them to music for a cappella female vocal trio ​Ju​ice​. ​​​I was absolutely thrilled that one of my compositions, G​​oing Somewhere​​, was selected for performance.Although I will likely never meet the authors of these texts Ella from Brixton, nor Susie from Hammersmith, (I mean, they didn’t even leave their surnames!) I like to think I have a creative connection to them. Just like Ella, i really enjoy being on my little island-of-me as I walk through the city or sit on a train, the stimulus of the flow of energy and people around me is something I very much enjoy. I also really love Susie was able to find her place in the world at trapeze school. This world is so richly diverse in its opportunities, there’s surely got to be something for everyone.

Sometimes mistakenly believed to be a traditional Christmas carol from the West Indies, the words and music for Calypso Carol were written in 1964 by one of the United Kingdom’s leading contemporary hymn writers, Michael Perry. At that time Perry was a student at Oak Hill Theological College and he wrote the song for a college carols concert. It became famous virtually by accident when Cliff Richard, who was hastily assembling a selection for radio, included the song in his program to replace a missing recording. It was subsequently included in the 1969 songbook Youth Praise 2. Calypso Carol steadily gained popularity and, in 2005, was voted one of the top ten choices in the BBC Songs of Praise poll of favourite carols for that year.

Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min. The bel canto composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) dedicated his arietta “Vaga luna, che inargenti†to Giluetta Pezzi, an Italian writer. The work is based on an anonymous text and was first published in 1838 by Casa Ricordi with two other songs by Bellini, “Il fervido desiderio†and “Dolente immagine di Fille mia.†Ricordi later included “Vaga luna†in a larger collection of Bellini’s songs published in 1935 to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the composer’s death. “Vaga luna†is a love poem in which the writer yearns to be reunited with his beloved. He repeatedly asks the moon, the “only witness to [his] ardent desire,†to “tell her†of the depth and sincerity of his feelings, and of his hopes that the future will bring them together. This arrangement preserves Bellini’s original piano part and places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

Published by J M Starr Music (A0.1389486). “Hallelujah†was originally released by Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen in 1984 on his album Various Positions. This composition, however, is one of the few in history that may be more well-known due to covers of the song than the original version. In 1991, John Cale did a cover of the song that removed the synthesizers, gospel choir, full band, and low, borderline-talking bass voice from Cohen’s original; and replaced it all with a bare-bones piano and tenor voice. It is not difficult to argue that this arrangement of the composition became the definitive version that all future covers would be based on: from Jeff Buckley’s stripped-down guitar and voice 1994 version, to Rufus Wainright’s piano and voice 2001 cover for the soundtrack to the motion picture Shrek, to k.d. lang, the a cappella group Pentatonix, and many, many more.When I first arranged this song in 2010 for my 8th grade SAB choir, I did not know the John Cale version existed; rather, I started by transcribing the Rufus Wainright recording and then made it my own from there. My arrangement is melodically akin to the Wainright, but I added harmonies in various places throughout. Lyric selection was also a choice I had to me, as each version of the song contains a different number of verses. Cohen’s 1984 original had four, and then in 1988 he sang a live version with seven (supposedly he drafted over 80 different verses!). I decided to go with five. This allowed me to structure the song in a way that got feature and give the melody to: a Soloist(s) (verse 1), the Baritones (verse 2), the Altos (verse 3), the Sopranos (verse 4) and then the entire choir (verse 5). Over the years that I have performed this with my students, I couldn’t help myself from rocking out with little bluesy fills and licks in the final choruses, so I decided to write it in. I hope you, your students, and accompanist have fun with that!

The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection.
