This charming 3-Part choir arrangement is a quodlibet of three traditional songs about rain: Rain, Rain, Go Away; It's Raining, It's Pouring; and Pitter Patter Raindrops. It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs are sung at the same time. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Suitable for elementary aged students (range E4-D5), and perfect for a fall (autumn), spring, or early summer concert, or classroom instruction. Approximate performance time 1:40. Published by Denny Glasscock (A0.923199). A new and different rendition of a very old and beloved christian hymn. After an instrumental introduction, based on the refrain from the original hymn by Robert Lowry (1864), the newly composed verses begin with a musical theme meant to represent flowing water in a rippling river or stream. The original lyrics are adapted for all five verses and the refrain. The first verse is followed by the refrain, adapted from the original hymn. After that the refrain follows verses 3 and 5. The song ends on the final refrain, as the tempo slows and the flowing water theme ends. The vocals start out unison, but quickly divide out to SAB parts, all in a comfortable range. The melody in the verses shifts from soprano to alto, just before it gets too low for some sopranos. However altos or baritones could probably sing the melody, as the highest notes are likely still contained within their upper range. Thus the piece could be performed as a solo for altos or baritones. Though the melody shifts, a bit, from soprano to alto, it is easily heard in continuity. Thus, intuitively, the audience, or congregation, will clearly hear the melody, and be easily able to sing along. The score provided here, contains the SAB parts and piano (with chord symbols). As you listen to the example provided, you will hear a string trio playing in the accompaniment, along with the piano. The violin, viola and violoncello adds a nice dimension to the accompaniment sound. An accompaniment track is also available under item no. S0.870603. It can be sung by just men, just women, or mixed voices SAB. (see SAB version)Although it is a simple arrangement, there is plenty to push and challenge your singers to help them to improve on technique. Singing on the 'nn' of 'sun' and 'mm' of 'comes' to add interest, creating a tension throughout the song with the grand release at the very end, singing 'comes' as an open vowel sound, and then shutting it back down to an 'mm' right at the last few seconds! It is a joyful song about finally feeling the gentle warmth of the sun after a winter full of cold, wind, rain and snow and long dark days. Reminding us of warmer sunnier days ahead. What could be more hopeful or more uplifting?I hope you enjoy this arrangement of this great Beatles' classic. It can be sung by just men, just women, (see SSA version) or mixed voices SAB.Although it is a simple arrangement, there is plenty to push and challenge your singers to help them to improve. Singing on the 'nn' of 'sun' and 'mm' of 'comes' to add interest, creating a tension throughout the song with the grand release at the very end, singing 'comes' as an open vowel sound, and then shutting it back down to an 'mm' right at the last few seconds! It is a joyful song about finally feeling the gentle warmth of the sun after a winter full of cold wind, rain and snow. Reminding us of warmer sunnier days ahead. What could be more hopeful or more uplifting?I hope you enjoy this arrangement of this great Beatles' classic. In order to expose my small church choir to the joys of a cappella singing, I wrote this SAB arrangement with parts that are very singable and easy to learn. The first verse is in octaves/unison to allow the performers to get a confident start before breaking into three parts in the refrain. Verse two features the baritones carrying the melody, accompanied by gentle harmony in the other two parts. The sopranos have the tune in the third verse, while the altos and baritones echo them with an underlying harmonized canon. The final verse has a simple soprano descant over the melody in the lower voices. After a strong build in the final refrain, the piece ends gently. This arrangement is a reachable challenge for a small a cappella choir.

Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min. Trained as an artist, he became an art teacher and later supervisor of art education in the public schools of Sharon, Pennsylvania. An active layman in the Methodist-Episcopal church, DeVenter showed particular skills during annual evangelistic meetings held by the church. Church members urged him to become an evangelist, and after five years of wavering between ministry and his desire to be recognized as an artist, he committed his life to one of evangelism.DeVenter travelled extensively throughout the United States, England, and Scotland, assisted by the singer Winfield Weeden. Although an active hymn-writer, only two hymns remain popular today, one of which is I Surrender All. Given the nature of his call and commitment to ministry, the text of this hymn gains deeper significance.
