Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768518). Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). Texts in the Oratorio de Noël is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental). 2. Luke 2,8-14. 3. Psalm 39,1. 4. John 11.27. 5. Psalm 117, 26-28. 6. Psalm 2,1 and Gloria Patri. 7. Psalm 109,3 and Graduale. 8. Isaiah 49,13. 9. Lamentations 2,19, Mica 4.13, Zachary 9,9, Isaiah 62,1. 10. Psalm 95,8-9, 11,13.

For S.A.B. choir with piano accompaniment. This is a very beautiful, harmonically rich and flowing work with the text adapted from Ecclesiastes 3. There are a few very brief times when Sopranos, or Altos, or Baritones divide. Vocal parts are all within normal ranges. Level of difficulty is moderate with lots of movement in the vocal parts. It works well for advanced high school groups, church choirs with smaller men's sections. There is also available a S.A.T.B. arrangement for more advanced and larger ensembles here on SMPPress.com. Johanna Müller-Hermann (1868-1941) was born in Vienna and after several years as a primary school teacher returned to music studying with a number of teachers including Alexander von Zemlinsky and Josef Foerster. As a composer she wrote a large number of chamber, vocal and orchestral works and enjoyed much success during her lifetime. She became a professor of music theory at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918 and much of her music was published by Universal Edition and Musikhaus Doblinger. Zwei Frauenchöre mit orchester op. 10 sets a text by Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) and a German translation of a poem by the Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885). The work was first published by Universal Edition in 1915.

I originally envisioned this piece for a Middle School Choir, but it works well with any group that wants to have fun. It is written in 3 part Treble clef which the conductor may assign as they see fit for their choir and performance. (Part 3 works very well with male voices.) Parts all stay within an octave from Middle C to C above. This lively version uses many styles of jazz to drive this piece, yet there is also a recurring descending third ostinato which is the rocking comfort this piece imparts. The piano part plays an important role in driving this piece and setting the moods. Each of the seven sections shifts the mood and jazz style but maintains a level of energy. After completing the jazz arrangements of the traditional chorus I tried various ways to extend the piece. One day while working on this piece I saw a news clip about another school bullying incident. I immediately made the connection -- at its heart Rock-a-My-Soul is really about overcoming obstacles to find comfort and acceptance. So I wrote some additional lyrics to create an anti-bullying, anti-depression section. I have soloists deliver the main lines to make it personal and invitational then the choir backs them up, call and response style, with Everything's gonna be alright. Lyrics throughout are all carefully worded so that the song may be used for either secular or sacred purposes. The context and location where it is sung will flesh out the implied and intended meaning. The Christian liturgy reflects this, often with a congregational procession into the church accompanied by the words below. The music is simple and joyful, and is scored for just three different choral voices (SABar/SAMen), typical of those available in parish churches. After an initial syncopated section, there follows a middle section of dotted rhythms, before returning to the syncopated theme, and ending in a glorious rising Tierce de Picardie. The work is short, breathless and exciting, matching the mood of that early moment in the Palm Sunday celebration.

The piano accompaniment subtly quotes the hymn melody, which you might recognise as the tune from Beethoven's Ode to Joy. The piece carries a strong message: unless our words carry love for those who live and speak differently from us, they will fall on silent ears. After a short 2-part introduction, the melody is presented in unison, and then in 3-part canon, imitating crowds speaking to one another. Throughout, a small group underscores the harmony with a pedal chant, listing the languages in which we can speak love. The work is best suited for Afrikaans-speakers. .

Firstly, Arabia's Magi sought him is a setting of original English words by the composer which references the journey of the Magi, their gifts and the redemption of the world following a humble birth. This three-part (S,A,Bar.) homophonic piece is only one page in length but, in its 45-second duration, sets the scene for the following Latin motet. Ubi est qui natus est uses the words from Matthew 2,2 when the Magi ask after the new-born King of Judea. Comprising three short contrapuntal sections, this section lasts about 1.15. Either section (English or Latin) may be used independently or, as intended, with the English followed immediately by the Latin.Marked as Early Intermediate because there are a few intervals which may catch the unwary sight-reader. However, with practice, this is certainly not difficult. (And, yes, I know this is not actually a Christmas piece, but it may well be included in a service of Lessons & Carols - and there was no option for Epiphany.)N.B. They rehearsed every Sunday afternoon between services and sang every Sunday morning for worship and often in the evenings. They loved the entire cantata and sang it with enthusiasm. Since that time other choirs have song the cantata, and I have added and subtracted and rewritten through the years. I wanted to get the entire cantata as close to perfection as possible before I published it, but I have decided to publish the portions I am most happy with piecemeal for the time being.
