My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work. I have written an 'outro' to bring a twist to the words. Originally it was arranged for a Gospel Choir so we used the words 'says our God', but I have since used it with a community choir and used the words 'Oohhh') there - both work well.Be warned - everyone is going through something, and this song seems to bring out a lot of emotion from the choir and audience. Keep some tissues andy. It sounds beautiful.Tried, tested and very much enjoyed by all :).

A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

Oscar Hammerstein II felt that the imagery of climbing mountains and fording streams suited Maria's character, as she seeks to find her own spiritual pathway and ultimately an escape to freedom with the von Trapp family. The singing needs to be strong and uplifting too - notice how the opening melody returns in the final section transposed to a higher key. This 3-part arrangement would suit church, school and amateur choirs and the piano accompaniment supports the voices throughout. There are two layout versions - one with the piano and one with just the vocal parts.

An original setting, for SSABar choir and piano by Philip Le Bas, of Quiet Peace by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), who worked as a Christian missionary among the poorest of the poor in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The poem is in the form of a prayer, and the music here has been been kept deliberately simple to perform, so that it canbe sung by a typical church choir. The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection. The poet feels an interior quiet peace while all around her there are storms and disquiet, because she knows that her Lord hears her voice. The setting is deliberately simple and undemanding, and it should be sung quietly, meditatively and without rushing. O Lord my heart is all a prayer, But it is silent unto thee; I am too tired to look for words, I rest upon thy sympathy To understand when I am dumb; And well I know thou hearest me. Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

This arrangement avoids the obvious piano chords in the vocal parts, focusing more on melodic polyphony. It is not too difficult to put together and has exciting parts for all singers. I've also done optional parts for the sax/guitar solo in the middle; these are provided in C (treble and bass clefs), B flat and E flat to cater for almost any solo instrument you have available to play it (possibly a choir member?). This solo should be loud and raucous! The piece still works perfectly well without, however. It is great to perform and to listen to for the audience. Enjoy!

Keith was born in New Zealand in 1967 and later moved, with his parents, to live in Queensland, Australia. There he took guitar lessons and entered local talent competitions. In 1983 he was a contestant on the Australian TV talent show New Faces. A few years later, he began making inroads into the Australian country music scene.In 1990, Urban signed with record label EMI in Australia and released his first self-titled album. Then in 1992 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in the hope of furthering his career and seven years later released a self-titled American debut album. A single from this album, Your Everything, made him the first male Australian performer to reach the Top 10 on the US country charts. Several more successful albums followed.Whilst living in Nashville, Keith often used cocaine, but after reaching a low point in 1998, he became determined to stop using the drug. Ska/pop band Madness recorded this song in 1981 and it has become a firm favourite, especially at weddings and anniversary parties. This arrangement avoids the obvious piano chords in the vocal parts, focusing more on melodic polyphony. It is not too difficult to put together and has exciting parts for all singers.
I've also done optional parts for the sax/guitar solo in the middle; these are provided in C (treble and bass clefs), B flat and E flat to cater for almost any solo instrument you have available to play it (possibly a choir member?).
