Set to ancient Japanese poetry by Lady Izumi Shikibu.Luke Flynn (b. 1988) is a composer and conductor living in Los Angeles, CA. In the media music industry, Flynn is a highly active force, composing the scores for a variety of films and video games, and working on film scores for the biggest composers in the industry, including John Williams, James Newton Howard, and Danny Elfman. His Hollywood music department credits include some of the biggest movies in the world, including Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney's The Jungle Book, Ghostbusters (2016), and many others. As a concert composer, his music is regularly performed and commissioned by major symphony orchestras, choirs, and ensembles throughout the world. Flynn’s works also consistently win or place as a finalist in international composition contests, including the Sydney Australia Contemporary Orchestra call for scores, the South Korea Busan Maru International Composition Contest (orchestra), the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, the CSUN Orchestra Northridge Composition Prize, and the Young New Yorkers’ Chorus Composition Competition. Flynn holds a Master of Music Composition degree from Butler University, where he studied with Michael Schelle, a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition from Clarke University, where he studied with Amy Dunker, and has also had the privilege of being the first ever American student to study music composition at 鹿å…島国際大å¦, the International University of Kagoshima in Japan, where he studied with Tadashi Kubo.www.LukeFlynnCompositions.com

Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min. It was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. For audiences and choirs of all ages, this arrangement is fun, up-tempo and high-energy, including scored hand claps in the a cappella section. Originally performed by the Seattle Women's Chorus, Kathleen McGuire's arrangement includes unison singing and easy harmonies combined with plenty of variety and each vocal part sharing the melody in the verses.
