This arrangement by Charles Callahan was originally set to the text of the Tantum Ergo, a Benediction hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas. Louis Vierne composed this music, his opus 2, in 1886 at the age of sixteen. He scored it for four mixed voices and organ, and also arranged it with orchestral accompaniment. This edition unites this beautiful romantic music with an even earlier Latin text, but in the English translation made in 1884 by Gerard Moultrie.

An Evening Prayer is just that - a prayer to sing to the Lord before retiring for the evening, although as an act of confession and connection with God, it is appropriate any time of the day! Notes from the arranger: This simple anthem has lots of possibilities.Let's start with the solo instrument. Feel free to use a violin, trumpet, flute, clarinet, or whatever you have available. Even a single organ line with a nice reed stop will work well. For the voices and depending on the people you have, you can use three separate voices for the solo parts, or separate sections. When the full choir comes in at mm. E, you will want to ensure good balance. The final Amen can be sung by three soloists or the full choir.

A popular version of this carol by Karl Leuner (originally called Wiegenlied, written in 1813) and arranged by Charles Macpherson (1870-1927) is published in Carols for Choirs 1 for SATB choir. However, with the lack of tenors and basses in many parish churches, the carol can often lie beyond the ability of many. Hence this arrangement for three-part choir: the range of the baritone part is from low A to high E flat, which should be achievable by most men (or women singing lower parts) in amateur choirs. Being such a beautiful, gentle and touching carol, this arrangement retains its original, simple a cappella nature, although a piano reduction is provided for practice purposes.
