Sentimental but not sappy, simple but not simplistic; easily singable in two parts with a few three part notes added in for singers with lower voices where needed. Two lyrical melodic sections (into AABAB coda) are shared between the parts supported by a stunning piano accompaniment featuring bell-like echoes and rich harmonies. The message of Christmas Is... is timeless - hope, joy, love and peace. On a personal note, the images evoked by the text are memories of my own childhood in wintry Canada where Christmas was made magical not by things (because no one had much) but by kind friends, seasonal sights and sounds, and simply being and sharing together.

He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). This is a revised version (September 2023) of the original arrangement and has been transposed down a tone with improved voice movement. The main theme is in 7/8 time, divided into 2, 2, and 3. It might sound tricky but singers will soon get to feel the rhythm and become completely at home in this time signature. Its recommended that the singers practise by counting 1-2-1-2-1-2-3 perhaps by also clapping on the off-beats. There’s plenty of contrast in the piece and singers are sure to enjoy the music. It’s scored for SSA choir (or boy choir) with keyboard accompaniment. The middle section uses much vocal counterpoint and has almost a waltz feeling to it so the singers would need to feel confident with indepedent vocal lines. There are no divisi sections and the piano part is of moderate difficulty but should be playable by any competent pianist. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522050). This is a lively arrangement based on the traditional text. The joyful main theme is in 7/8 time and divides into two plus two plus three. It might sound tricky but singers will soon get to feel the rhythm and become completely at home in this time signature. It’s scored for SSA choir with keyboard accompaniment. In the middle section, sopranos are divisi and there are opportunities for solos though they are optional. Audiences and singers alike are sure to enjoy this joyful music and the keyboard part is fairly straightforward. It would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service. Published by John A Sandford (A0.1307929). This is a simple but effective reworking of the standard Christmas carol for the modern age. I have changed the time signature to common time (from its original 3/4) and introduced a shuffle rhythm in the accompaniment and vocals. Although written as SSA, the lower part could probably be sung by tenor voices. There is a descant for a few upper voices in the final verse.Although the song is considerably different to the original, being more of a Jazz/Blues number, it is still, in essence, a simple Christmas song to be enjoyed by choirs of any size or ability.
