Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768518). Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). Texts in the Oratorio de Noël is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental). 2. Luke 2,8-14. 3. Psalm 39,1. 4. John 11.27. 5. Psalm 117, 26-28. 6. Psalm 2,1 and Gloria Patri. 7. A choir is the least demanding and at the same time best educational tool.' And that is why singing had always been part of his teaching activities, be it while trying and practising musical-theoretical tasks, be it while rehearsing old and modern choral settings. No wonder that the composer had dealt with choral music all his life, addressing himself to all different kinds of vocal ensembles: to mixed choirs, male-voice and children's choirs, professional choirs and trained singers. He developed his a-cappella style during his training with Arnold Mendelssohn and Bernhard Sekles at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt. As a consequence, the sketch books from his student days also contain three-part vocal settings on cantus firmi. The sacred choral works presented here (1. Christus, der ist mein Leben, 2. Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort, 3. Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, 4. Gott des Himmels) are not only interesting as compositional studies, but also as sonorous and catchy choral music which can be easily performed by any good church choir.

In just 15 minutes, this work retells the highly dramatic story of The Newport Rising. Tim Riley specialises in creating compelling works of intermediate difficult for Community Choirs with mixed ability singers. In 1839, 4,000 Chartists marched on Newport in Gwent, Wales, UK. They were part of the Chartist movement, campaigning for better voting right for all. Unarmed, apart from sticks, they arrived at the Westgate Hotel in Newport where they demanded the release of a political prisoner being held there. Local militia opened fire. Twenty two protestors were killed and a further fifty injured. The leaders of the march were sentenced to be 'hanged, drawn and quartered'. Although the march ended in tragedy, most of their demands for universal suffrage are now enshrined in the laws of most democratic societies across the world. The music has been composed in a style that many will find reminiscent of Les Miserable, but there are also touches of Lloyd Webber, Kurt Weill and Gilbert and Sullivan. This arrangement is ideal for community choirs and is a SAAB arrangement. There are two alto parts, but the lower alto part could easily be taken by tenors to give a SATB arrangement. This piece was originally composed and arranged for the Insole Court Community Choir in South Wales (near where the Chartist March took place). In May 2022, the Insole Court Community Choir competed at the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts with Tim Riley conducting and won the Musical Theatre section with this work. The musical version was written by Thomas Meehan (book), Charles Strouse (music) and Martin Charnin (lyrics) and first appeared on Broadway in 1977 and ran for nearly 6 years. Tomorrow is a powerful, confident song, which highlights Annie's hopeful attitude, despite the hard knocks, and it demands a strong choral performance from singers. This arrangement is for 3 parts with some extra divisi at the end, and throughout the melody line could be doubled by tenor voices to bolster the sopranos. The rhythms should be slightly relaxed, almost swung on the dotted rhythms, and long notes should remain sustained and full. This arrangement would suit both adult and school mixed choirs. There is a vocal score included which will help singers avoid juggling with too many pages.

An original setting, for SSABar choir and piano by Philip Le Bas, of Quiet Peace by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), who worked as a Christian missionary among the poorest of the poor in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The poem is in the form of a prayer, and the music here has been been kept deliberately simple to perform, so that it canbe sung by a typical church choir. The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection. The poet feels an interior quiet peace while all around her there are storms and disquiet, because she knows that her Lord hears her voice. The setting is deliberately simple and undemanding, and it should be sung quietly, meditatively and without rushing. O Lord my heart is all a prayer, But it is silent unto thee; I am too tired to look for words, I rest upon thy sympathy To understand when I am dumb; And well I know thou hearest me.
