Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522049). This is a dramatic and attractive setting of the traditional text by Nahum Tate (1652-1715). Tate was an Anglo-Irish poet, hymn writer and lyricist, who became Poet Laureate in 1692. He’s best known for The History of King Lear, his 1681 adaptation of Shakespeare's play. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's timeless opera, Dido and Aeneas. The traditional melody of While Shepherds Watched is well-known, but this new setting brings in a wealth of new musical material. This is a tuneful work and is sure to be enjoyed by your singers and audiences alike. It is in 2/2 time throughout but journeys through several contrasting keys. It’s also available for SAT and SATB choirs with keyboard accompaniment.  There’s an a cappella section in the middle and more suited to experienced singers. The piano part is not difficult and should be within the reach of any competent pianist. It might look a bit daunting to some, but it's easy when counted as 1-2-1-2-1-2-3. Its recommended that singers practise this rhythm first, perhaps by clapping on the off-beats. There’s plenty of contrast in the piece and singers are sure to enjoy the music. It’s scored for SAT choir with keyboard accompaniment. It is thus a useful piece for high school or college choirs that have no bass section. The middle section uses much vocal counterpoint and has almost a waltz feeling to it. Choir members need to be reasonably experienced at singing independent vocal parts. The piano part is of moderate difficulty but could be handled by any competent pianist. This is a new arrangement (as of Seotember 2023) in which the music has been transposed down one tone from the original. This joyful anthem would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service. The vocal range is as follows: Soprano: C4 - F5; Alto: A3 - D5; Tenor C3 - E4. (Duration 03:03).

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1296267). This is a lively arrangement based on the traditional text but a completely new melody. It's an English Christmas carol, which dates back at least to the 17th century. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the those that carried the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century.The joyful main theme is in 7/8 time and divides into 2+2+3. This is easier than it sounds because much of the piece consists of  four measures of 7/8 followed by a measure of 4/4. Singers will soon get to feel the rhythm and become familiar with this time signature. It’s scored for a fairly experienced SAA choir with keyboard accompaniment. The SAA voicing is ideal for high school or college use, where lower voices may not be available. The arrangement has really been conceived for boy-choir or girl-choir. In the reflective middle section, there are opportunities for solos, though they are optional. Audiences and singers alike are sure to enjoy this joyful music. The keyboard part is fairly straightforward though requires a competent pianist. It would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service.
