My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work. Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

In just 15 minutes, this work retells the highly dramatic story of The Newport Rising. Tim Riley specialises in creating compelling works of intermediate difficult for Community Choirs with mixed ability singers. In 1839, 4,000 Chartists marched on Newport in Gwent, Wales, UK. They were part of the Chartist movement, campaigning for better voting right for all. Unarmed, apart from sticks, they arrived at the Westgate Hotel in Newport where they demanded the release of a political prisoner being held there. Local militia opened fire. Twenty two protestors were killed and a further fifty injured. The leaders of the march were sentenced to be 'hanged, drawn and quartered'. Although the march ended in tragedy, most of their demands for universal suffrage are now enshrined in the laws of most democratic societies across the world. The music has been composed in a style that many will find reminiscent of Les Miserable, but there are also touches of Lloyd Webber, Kurt Weill and Gilbert and Sullivan. This arrangement is ideal for community choirs and is a SAAB arrangement. There are two alto parts, but the lower alto part could easily be taken by tenors to give a SATB arrangement. This piece was originally composed and arranged for the Insole Court Community Choir in South Wales (near where the Chartist March took place). In May 2022, the Insole Court Community Choir competed at the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts with Tim Riley conducting and won the Musical Theatre section with this work. Myrthen, or “myrtles,†were the flowers traditionally associated with a marriage celebration. Schumann completed the Myrthen cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Heinrich Heine, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Widmung,†which means “Dedication,†is the first song in the cycle, based on a love poem by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The frequent repetition of the word “you†in the text, along with the soaring melody and undulating arpeggios that comprise the music, all serve to convey the composer’s state of blissful fulfillment as he contemplates marrying his beloved. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. It was premiered in 2013 by the University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club under the direction of conductor Jaclyn Johnson. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

Sometimes mistakenly believed to be a traditional Christmas carol from the West Indies, the words and music for Calypso Carol were written in 1964 by one of the United Kingdom’s leading contemporary hymn writers, Michael Perry. At that time Perry was a student at Oak Hill Theological College and he wrote the song for a college carols concert. It became famous virtually by accident when Cliff Richard, who was hastily assembling a selection for radio, included the song in his program to replace a missing recording. It was subsequently included in the 1969 songbook Youth Praise 2. Calypso Carol steadily gained popularity and, in 2005, was voted one of the top ten choices in the BBC Songs of Praise poll of favourite carols for that year.

This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) An original setting, for SSABar choir and piano by Philip Le Bas, of Quiet Peace by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), who worked as a Christian missionary among the poorest of the poor in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The poem is in the form of a prayer, and the music here has been been kept deliberately simple to perform, so that it canbe sung by a typical church choir. The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection. The poet feels an interior quiet peace while all around her there are storms and disquiet, because she knows that her Lord hears her voice. The setting is deliberately simple and undemanding, and it should be sung quietly, meditatively and without rushing. O Lord my heart is all a prayer, But it is silent unto thee; I am too tired to look for words, I rest upon thy sympathy To understand when I am dumb; And well I know thou hearest me. I know thou hearest me because A quiet peace comes down to me, And fills the places where before Weak thoughts were wandering wearily; And deep within me it is calm, Though waves are tossing outwardly.
