Great for choirs low on male voices. Performance: I wrote this piece as the finale to The Father Sent the Son, a cantata I wrote for one of my church choirs. The last theme in this piece is a reprise of the title music. I was thinking of the shepherds running to tell their neighbors what they had seen that wonderful night in Bethlehem. Avoid singing with a heavy tone. There should be buoyancy in the tone and in the diction. The tempo is fast a mm140, but it works if you pianist can handle it. I have done it at mm132 on more than occasion for a piano player's sake. It still worked okay, but if you can manage 140,do it. Published by J M Starr Music (A0.1389486). “Hallelujah†was originally released by Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen in 1984 on his album Various Positions. This composition, however, is one of the few in history that may be more well-known due to covers of the song than the original version. In 1991, John Cale did a cover of the song that removed the synthesizers, gospel choir, full band, and low, borderline-talking bass voice from Cohen’s original; and replaced it all with a bare-bones piano and tenor voice. It is not difficult to argue that this arrangement of the composition became the definitive version that all future covers would be based on: from Jeff Buckley’s stripped-down guitar and voice 1994 version, to Rufus Wainright’s piano and voice 2001 cover for the soundtrack to the motion picture Shrek, to k.d. lang, the a cappella group Pentatonix, and many, many more.When I first arranged this song in 2010 for my 8th grade SAB choir, I did not know the John Cale version existed; rather, I started by transcribing the Rufus Wainright recording and then made it my own from there. My arrangement is melodically akin to the Wainright, but I added harmonies in various places throughout. Lyric selection was also a choice I had to me, as each version of the song contains a different number of verses. Cohen’s 1984 original had four, and then in 1988 he sang a live version with seven (supposedly he drafted over 80 different verses!). I decided to go with five. This allowed me to structure the song in a way that got feature and give the melody to: a Soloist(s) (verse 1), the Baritones (verse 2), the Altos (verse 3), the Sopranos (verse 4) and then the entire choir (verse 5). Over the years that I have performed this with my students, I couldn’t help myself from rocking out with little bluesy fills and licks in the final choruses, so I decided to write it in. I hope you, your students, and accompanist have fun with that!

If you are looking to highlight your women's group and feature soloists from within the ensemble, this women's-choir-friendly piece is a harmonically interesting and pianistically supported way to explore those textures.The composer writes: I often find it difficult to find music for grown women: much treble repertoire is written for children's ranges and feature children's themes, and the remainder seems to be about romantic relationships. When searching for a text that speaks to the nature of a woman, I found Emily Dickinson's little-known For largest Woman's Heart I knew. It seemed to pair naturally with Heart! We will forget him! and provide context rooted in personal strength.While Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly 1,800 poems were published during her lifetime, usually altered significantly to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time. A complete, and mostly unaltered, scholarly collection of her poetry first became available five full years after Aaron Copland's musical settings of her poetry. Boyle’s interpretation the shifting temperament of the song has been given special attention – the conflict between optimism and foreboding. The text of the song, which tells of a heartsick young girl longing to be reunited with her lover, is known in Irish collections from the mid-18th century. In early versions the object of the girl’s affections was an Irish highwayman who was hanged in 1750 for pursuing his ‘trade’ on the Curragh. When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances. Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min.
