It might look a bit daunting to some, but it's easy when counted as 1-2-1-2-1-2-3. Its recommended that singers practise this rhythm first, perhaps by clapping on the off-beats. There’s plenty of contrast in the piece and singers are sure to enjoy the music. It’s scored for SAT choir with keyboard accompaniment. It is thus a useful piece for high school or college choirs that have no bass section. The middle section uses much vocal counterpoint and has almost a waltz feeling to it. Choir members need to be reasonably experienced at singing independent vocal parts. The piano part is of moderate difficulty but could be handled by any competent pianist. This is a new arrangement (as of Seotember 2023) in which the music has been transposed down one tone from the original. The Heart It Is a Strange Beast examines the conflict that occurs between the logic of the brain and the emotion of the heart when it comes to one's romantic endeavors. The piece is written for Three Part Choir with woodwind, bass guitar, and simple percussion accompaniment. There are a lot of complex rhythms and at times the voice parts are almost polyphonic. The piece also explores the Dorian mode which is a rather rare key for modern performances. Even though this piece is challenging it is very fun to play and has a lot of educational potential for intermediate level groups.The piece by Mark Lewis was written with Men's Ensemble in mind but its range is such that any three part ensemble could probably perform it. The music in written in treble clef for ease of reading. Clarinet is the preferred woodwind instrument but sheet music has been included for C, Bb, and Eb instruments. Bass guitar is preferred but any bass instrument would work well for the bass line and the percussion parts are also intended to be easy to play on multiple different types of percussion instruments.

I Still Call Australia Home was written, first performed and recorded by Peter Allen in 1980. In that year the song peaked on the Australian Singles Chart at number 72. But whilst its initial impact was somewhat less than stellar, it has gone on to become one of those songs that is part of the national psyche and is well-known by most Australians.In I still Call Australia Home Peter Allen wrote of his longing, no matter where in the World he might travel, to always return home to Australia, where he could be near his family and friends once again. The song is now regarded as a heart-warming expression of Australian patriotism and nostalgia for home.Its adoption by Qantas in the mid 1990s as the centrepiece of a long-running advertising campaign exposed a new generation of Australians to the song and greatly boosted its popularity. The Qantas campaign became one of the top Australian television campaigns of all time. It has linked together Australians living at home with those travelling or living overseas. She reminiscences about her past memories with him and in the climax, she proclaims her love for him as she is soon to leave his side. This combination, an SSA choir with violin and piano, is chosen for it captures the character of a female speaker, and the piano adds depth to the piece but still keeps the gentleness of the message. The bright timbre of the violin as well as the use of D major is to convey positivity: this is not a sad piece. This speaker looks forward to the future and treasures their past moments together. This piece is in verse-chorus form. The chorus, starting from ‘Je t’aimerai’, and followed by ‘Jusqu’a...’ repeats three times before arriving at the final climax in A major. In between the second chorus and the third chorus, a transitional section, in F# minor, is added. This section, as it is about her difficult decision to leave, is stronger and faster than other sections. The original lyrics are inspired by a famous TV show, Game of Thrones , in which a character says the lyrics in the chorus. Different techniques are used to bring out the message in the lyrics, such as word-painting, use of harmony and instruments, and key changes. Parting is inevitable in any relationship. I hope this piece can describe some emotions and thoughts in the face of parting and can echo among not only lovers but families and friends as well.

Lux Aeterna By Sally Whitwell On 12 June, 2016, the international LGBTQ+ community was hit hard with the news of a mass shooting in one of our community’s entertainment venues, a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Forty nine people were killed, and fifty three wounded in what was deemed a terrorist attack. At the time, it was the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in United States history. I wrote this piece in the wake of that news, I suppose as a way of processing this attack on my community. The club was hosting a special ‘Latin Night’ that night, so the majority of the victims were Hispanic. Culturally, Hispanic populations have a very strong Roman Catholic tradition, so it seemed the right thing to incorporate a piece of the Catholic Requiem Mass. The Lux Aeterna is the Communion antiphon for that Mass. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine:Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. The narrative spans the creation arc, from the beginning of time through the emergence of organisms and proliferation of species. The challenge we face is living together peacefully with all beings in order to leave behind a legacy of understanding and love. The piece opens with a bit of an uncomfortable pentatonic scale and haunting vocal solos, followed by G minor pentatonic with a tenacious rhythmic ostinato, closing with rich divisi harmonies and aleatoric texture.Soloists may shape the unmetered solos as they wish. Singers may spread the glissandi evenly over the duration of the note. In choral ad lib sections, you may stagger your entrances and shape the musical arc by varying note order, dynamics, duration of notes, number of singers, and frequency, not pointillistic but expressive. In piano ad lib sections, you may play the indicated notes in a pointillistic style, scrambling the order of pitches to create a celestial soundscape over the held chord. This ever-popular American folksong probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SAB arrangement for choir and piano is intended for high school, college or amateur choir and is ideal if the number of male voices is limited. The song is set in E flat major and modulates into F major. There is only one brief divisi passage (3 measure) of sustained notes in the soprano part. The top soprano note is F5 on the top line of the treble staff and the lowest note is Bâ™3 just under the staff. The top alto note is Bâ™ (mid-staff) (Bâ™4) and the lowest note is also Bâ™3. The top baritone note is the D above the bass staff (D4) and the lowest note is the low Aâ™ on the bass staff (Aâ™2). With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.
