Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1264867). This lovely folksong is thought to have come from Scotland, though similar versions have been recorded in other parts of Britain. The song is also known as O Waly, Waly which means something like “woe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906, using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because in the past, performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted an entire family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was arranged for voice and piano in 1948 by British composer Benjamin Britten but in more recent times, was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SAB arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for high school or college choir, especially if the tenor/bass section is a bit low on numbers. Each section of the choir has the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the soprano part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest note is G5 (which occurs only once and safely approached) and the highest note in the alto part is C5 (in the middle of the treble staff). The bartione part lies between A flat 2 (bottom space in bass clef) and D3 (just above the staff). The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike.

Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

This ever-popular American folksong probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SAT arrangement for choir and piano is intended for high school, college or amateur choir and is ideal if the number of male voices is limited. The song is set in E flat major and modulates into F major. There is only one brief divisi passage (3 measure) of sustained notes in the soprano part. The top soprano note is F5 on the top line of the treble staff and the lowest note is E â™ on the lowest line of the staff. The top alto note is Bâ™ (mid-staff) (Bâ™4) and the lowest note is B â™3. The top tenor note is D4 (middle of treble staff) and the lowest note (only twice) is the low B flat (with an optional B flat an octave higher). With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It would make a useful addition to your choir’s repertoire.Â
