St Helen's church in Hollinfare celebrated its 500th anniversary in 1997 and invited the gentlemen of Manchester Cathedral Choir to sing at the celebratory service. The service included a Te Deum and Jubilate, which I wrote especially for the purpose. The Te Deum is a full setting with organ and alto, tenor and bass singers. The Jubilate is a psalm chant. Both are available on this site. The sound sample in each case is the original performance.The words of the Te Deum are: We praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. The Dream of the Rood by the poet Caedmon is one of the earliest English-language Christian poems. This work sets to music stanzas from the poem selected & translated by (and used with the permission of) Fr. Charles Boyd. Effectively a short Mystery Play, it is a dialogue between a chorus and the Rood, voicing its feelings at bearing Christ and being a necessary part of the salvation of the world. With a light organ accompaniment, optional hand-bell / tubular bell, SSA, SAB splits and a Bass solo, this 8-minute work would be ideal for Good Friday or general Passiontide use. Now fully updated and re-set in Musescore.

Published by Daniel Carter (A0.1208780). Francis Bellamy (1855–1931) penned the Pledge of Allegiance for a campaign by the Youth's Companion, a patriotic circular and magazine. The Pledge is a noble contribution to the values and standards of American citizenship and has been recited daily in classrooms and public events for over a century. Regardless of periods of national strife and perilous times, it stands as a symbol of goodness, hope, opportunity, and freedom, with liberty and justice for all. In 1952 the Pledge was changed to add the words “under God.†A debate about the appropriateness of including these words because of the division of church and state remains, however, this setting includes options for both possibilities in favor of freedom of choice for all Americans.This arrangement is designed for school choirs and choruses of all kinds, including the higher education sector as well as civic and church. The SAB part-writing is in manageable voice ranges and not difficult to learn and perform. The original concert choir setting of this piece was performed by the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir in July of 1995 on their “Music and the Spoken Word†broadcast.

The Handsome Cabin Boy (also known as the Female Cabin Boy) tells the tale of a young girl who longs to see the world, so dresses up as a boy and runs away to sea. Her good looks attract the attention of both the Captain and his wife! Her true identity is eventually discovered as is the double affair! For ease verse, each part is either on the tune or singing their own harmony line against the melody. I have marked at the start of each verse which part is on the melody for ease. Eventually all the parts come together in the final verse. At this point you will need to allocate a few voices from each part to sing the melody or if you are able to go into SSAA at this point you could give the tune to Alto 1.
