Lux Aeterna By Sally Whitwell On 12 June, 2016, the international LGBTQ+ community was hit hard with the news of a mass shooting in one of our community’s entertainment venues, a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Forty nine people were killed, and fifty three wounded in what was deemed a terrorist attack. At the time, it was the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in United States history. I wrote this piece in the wake of that news, I suppose as a way of processing this attack on my community. The club was hosting a special ‘Latin Night’ that night, so the majority of the victims were Hispanic. Culturally, Hispanic populations have a very strong Roman Catholic tradition, so it seemed the right thing to incorporate a piece of the Catholic Requiem Mass. The Lux Aeterna is the Communion antiphon for that Mass. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine:Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord, with Thy Saints for evermore: for Thou art gracious. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them: With Thy Saints for evermore, for Thou art gracious. Everlasting light shine upon them

This arrangement by Charles Callahan was originally set to the text of the Tantum Ergo, a Benediction hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas. Louis Vierne composed this music, his opus 2, in 1886 at the age of sixteen. He scored it for four mixed voices and organ, and also arranged it with orchestral accompaniment. This edition unites this beautiful romantic music with an even earlier Latin text, but in the English translation made in 1884 by Gerard Moultrie.

English.Night Vision was commissioned by Persephone Singers, a women’s choir in Whitehorse, Yukon, directed by Barbara Chamberlin. It was premiered on May 2, 2015 at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse. This setting of Whitehorse poet, Joanna Lilley, was part of Whitehorse Community Choir’s major commissioning project, which paired Yukon poets with Yukon and Canadian composers and arrangers. The words and music of Night Vision convey the spirit of the cold, vast northern wilderness. The fast, energetic music complements images of wild foxes, coyotes and wolves at night, through the back gate, two pairs of eyes electric in the flash-light. Contrasting homophonic and contrapuntal sections build in intensity toward the climactic final moments and a loud ending. This piece would be an effective finale to a set or program. Duration: 2:40.

The traditional version of this text is found here, while a more modern translation occurs at 636. The initial part of the Gloria Patri may be traced back to the Trinitarian baptismal formula recordedin Matthew 28: 19; it was probably used by early Christians as an acclamation. The second part, which begins as it was in the beginning, was added in the fourth century as a response to the Arian heresy. Thus the text reflects the orthodox insistence on the consubstantiality of the Son with the Father and the eternal unity and equality of the three persons in the Trinity. Liturgical Use: Traditionally used at the end of Old Testament psalms and New Testament canticles and at the conclusion of certain prayers or creedal statements; a general doxology.
