It is sung by Delilah in act 2 as she attempts to seduce Samson into revealling the secret of his strength. Originally is written for mezzosoprano, and I kept the original key in this arrangement for SSA, female ensemble (choir or trio), with piano accompaniment and flute or violin, optional in 2nd verse. Piano part is simplified according to original. The melody in vocal parts and piano is the same in both verses (except last few bars). It's available in 2 more versions: for SSA-piano-violin and SSA-piano-clarinet Lyrics: english & french The pdf file contains score (19 pages) and flute part (2 pages). There's nothing ancient about its style though, it's full of life, and positively skips along.It may have its origins in the book of Isaiah ch 1 v 3: the ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib.This arrangement is for SSA choir with piano accompaniment and optional violin. If you have a friendly violinist, the violin line adds a real sparkle!People who aren't used to singing in French won't find it too taxing (I hope!) as there's lots of repetition in the verses, and the refrain stays the same.Translation: v1.Between the ox and the grey donkey the little boy sleeps. Ref: A thousand heavenly angels, a thousand seraphim, fly around this great God of love.v2: In Mary's arms sleeps the fruit of life.v3: Between roses and lilies sleeps the divine child.v4: Surrounded by the cheerful shepherds the little boy sleeps.

A comment on the collection by an Oxford piano teacher: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Here we find a gentle and ethereal world, where rhythms lilt and words echo. The twelve songs, suitable for choir, evoke a dreamy, water-colour landscape with no harsh sounds, the tunes are singable and in a traditional style that Tolkien would surely have approved.
