The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 – D5; Alto: A3 (only once) – B4; Tenor: C3 (only once) – D4.

This soulful 2.5 minute song has gorgeous harmonies which were transcribed from The Staves version of the song and re-arranged for SSA and piano. At the end, there is an a cappella section for a solo trio accompanied by the rest of the choir doing a simple rhythmic figure based on the previous piano part. One of the members of The Everyvoice Women's choir, in the UK, brought it to my attention and they will perform it in July. It sounds really lovely. As an American folk balled with origins possibly from the UK, it is one of those songs that sounds quite cheery but what lies beneath is a sad tale. The female narrator spurns a potential suitor, following her mother's warning to avoid the advances of men so her daughter can avoid the heart break she herself had endured.

Ska/pop band Madness recorded this song in 1981 and it has become a firm favourite, especially at weddings and anniversary parties. This arrangement avoids the obvious piano chords in the vocal parts, focusing more on melodic polyphony. It is not too difficult to put together and has exciting parts for all singers. I've also done optional parts for the sax/guitar solo in the middle; these are provided in C (treble and bass clefs), B flat and E flat to cater for almost any solo instrument you have available to play it (possibly a choir member?). This solo should be loud and raucous! The piece still works perfectly well without, however. It is great to perform and to listen to for the audience. Enjoy!

Approx. 3:42.I first began writing a Christmas carol about the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020 when it seemed unfathomable that the global social distancing measures could last until Christmas. First drafts, therefore, were upbeat and whimsical. The song was completed in May 2020, however, and not only did it seem likely that lockdowns could extend not only to Christmas, but beyond – until a treatment or a vaccine could be found. Though obviously written with this contemporary situation in mind, Holding on for Christmas avoids direct references to remain a universal message of hope despite hopeless circumstances. Through its imagery of a Nativity story told wrong, of an individual facing unexplained solitude, and of enduring a winter in order to experience brighter days ahead, the song can apply to many cryptic or overt scenarios.

Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her. I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’ As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving. I hope you enjoy it. Included in this pack are a full score, vocal score and cello part with what I hope are useful cues for you to navigate your way around the piece. Other formats will be available shortly with more choir involvement and for those without access to a cello.

This is one of the most popular and best-loved folksongs of all time, made famous by Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan and many others. The song is thought to have originated over four hundred years ago. Scarborough Fair is in the Dorian mode and a song suitable for any happy occasion. Its celebratory quality would make it ideal for holidays, end-of-semester concerts, weddings or folk music events. There are many different versions of the lyrics and by the end of the 19th century, dozens of variants existed. In this arrangement, four of the most popular verses have been used. The repeated chorus of “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme†is significant. In olden times, these herbs had medicinal purposes. In addition, parsley was associated with comfort, sage with strength, rosemary with love and thyme with courage. Scarborough (SKAH-buh-ruh) is an English coastal town in the county of Yorkshire. It was occupied by the Romans during the fourth and fifth centuries but today has become the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast with a thriving fishing industry. In this arrangement, each section of the choir shares the melody and the voice parts avoid difficult leaps. All the vocal parts are safely within normal range. Your choir is sure to enjoy singing this rewarding arrangement. This is scored for SAT choir and ideal for high school or college use where there are often fewer lower voices. The musical Annie is based on a 1924 comic strip by Harold Gray which was in turn inspired by a poem written by James Riley. Tomorrow is a powerful, confident song, which highlights Annie's hopeful attitude, despite the hard knocks, and it demands a strong choral performance from singers. This arrangement is for 3 parts with some extra divisi at the end, and throughout the melody line could be doubled by tenor voices to bolster the sopranos. The rhythms should be slightly relaxed, almost swung on the dotted rhythms, and long notes should remain sustained and full. This arrangement would suit both adult and school mixed choirs. There is a vocal score included which will help singers avoid juggling with too many pages.

Great for choirs low on male voices. Performance: I wrote this piece as the finale to The Father Sent the Son, a cantata I wrote for one of my church choirs. The last theme in this piece is a reprise of the title music. I was thinking of the shepherds running to tell their neighbors what they had seen that wonderful night in Bethlehem. Avoid singing with a heavy tone. There should be buoyancy in the tone and in the diction. The tempo is fast a mm140, but it works if you pianist can handle it. I have done it at mm132 on more than occasion for a piano player's sake. It still worked okay, but if you can manage 140,do it. Ska/pop band Madness recorded this song in 1981 and it has become a firm favourite, especially at weddings and anniversary parties. This arrangement avoids the obvious piano chords in the vocal parts, focusing more on melodic polyphony. It is not too difficult to put together and has exciting parts for all singers.
I've also done optional parts for the sax/guitar solo in the middle; these are provided in C (treble and bass clefs), B flat and E flat to cater for almost any solo instrument you have available to play it (possibly a choir member?). This solo should be loud and raucous! The piece still works perfectly well without, however. It is great to perform and to listen to for the audience. Enjoy!
