Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774734). White Winter Hymnal was first released by the American indie folk band Fleet Foxes in 2008 as the first single from their debut self-titled album. The song was written by group member Robin Pecknold and has been covered by several groups and solo singers including Kim Wilde in 2013 and Pentatonix in 2014.The meaning behind White Winter Hymnal is somewhat open to conjecture. Pecknold has explained that he intended this gently uplifting song to be like Whistle While You Work from Snow White – something to hum along to as you do the dishes. Pecknold added that the words actually tell a more painful story about loss of the innocence of youth, being about my experience when I was a kid, you know, like I had my really tight group of friends. But as we grew up from grade school to junior high to high school, everybody just kind of split off, and everybody kind of changed. I went from like this tight-knit group to, seemingly for no reason, everybody was kind of going their own way. That song is just about that feeling.This very accessible arrangement, featuring piano and guitar accompaniment with tambourine percussion, is ideally suited to winter and general programming, and makes an ideal concert opener.

Lux Aeterna By Sally Whitwell On 12 June, 2016, the international LGBTQ+ community was hit hard with the news of a mass shooting in one of our community’s entertainment venues, a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Forty nine people were killed, and fifty three wounded in what was deemed a terrorist attack. At the time, it was the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in United States history. I wrote this piece in the wake of that news, I suppose as a way of processing this attack on my community. The club was hosting a special ‘Latin Night’ that night, so the majority of the victims were Hispanic. Culturally, Hispanic populations have a very strong Roman Catholic tradition, so it seemed the right thing to incorporate a piece of the Catholic Requiem Mass. The Lux Aeterna is the Communion antiphon for that Mass. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine:Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Great for choirs low on male voices. Performance: I wrote this piece as the finale to The Father Sent the Son, a cantata I wrote for one of my church choirs. The last theme in this piece is a reprise of the title music. I was thinking of the shepherds running to tell their neighbors what they had seen that wonderful night in Bethlehem. Avoid singing with a heavy tone. There should be buoyancy in the tone and in the diction. The tempo is fast a mm140, but it works if you pianist can handle it. I have done it at mm132 on more than occasion for a piano player's sake. It still worked okay, but if you can manage 140,do it.
