Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1357822). “Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide†pairs a text by Marcus Morris Wells (1815-1895) with the Scottish/Irish folk melody “WILD MOUNTAIN THYME.â€Little is known of Wells, who was converted to Christianity as a youth at a mission in Buffalo, New York and spent most of his life near Hartwick, New York as a farmer and maker of farm implements. “Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide†appears to be his single, memorable hymn; according to the website hymnary.org, it has appeared in 675 hymnals since its publication in 1858.The tune used as the basis of this arrangement is known variously as “Wild Mountain Thyme,†“Purple Heather,†and “Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?†and is a variant of the song “The Braes of Balquhither†by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774–1810) and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780–1829), adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885–1971) into “Wild Mountain Thyme.†This simple folk melody is ideally suited to the simple, personal sentiment of Wells’ text. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Canorous Music Publishing #906169. Published by Canorous Music Publishing (A0.1317505). Trebled Seas combines three popular 19th-century sea shanties into an epic voyage on the high seas. Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heaveâ€, “haulâ€, and “bound†away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.

This hauntingly beautiful and artistic arrangement of She's Like the Swallow contains the original, very old Newfoundland folk text very rarely used due to it's tragic story line. It is in the genre of beware the uncaring man common in folk songs of Europe which served to teach and warn young girls about the dangers of infatuation. This genre travelled to the United States and Canada in the 1700's. The expression apron low/apron high is a common thread in this genre and refers to being pregnant. She's Like the Swallow tells the tragic tale of a young girl who has fallen in love with, no doubt, a handsome but uncaring man. The story is told from each character's perspective plus an observer (narrator). The girl ultimately creates her own funeral bower of rose petals (ripping them off in desperation as she frantically runs through a garden), lies down on this 'bed of roses' and dies.  You have probably heard this song many times without ever knowing the true meaning due to significant verses left out. You will need a skilled accompanist! The accompaniment utilizes significant word painting throughout to highlight the haunting melody line. Word painting depicts the swallow, uncaring cruelty, desperation, blindly going in circles, anger, church bells and fading away/dying. The conductor is free to take liberties with the tempi and dynamics in order to create a unique interpretation that will resonate with their own choral group. This arrangement of She's Like the Swallow is an exceptional festival or competition piece and one that should be in the repertoire of every skilled women's choir! Skye Boat Song is one of my favoryte folk songs from the British Isles. "Skye" refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod.
This arrangement, featuring a solo Soprano and SSA choir with Piano accompaniment, reharmonizes the traditional folk song with a contemporary twist. This arrangement would work well for any a cappella high school, college, or community choir looking for modern arrangements of traditional folk songs.
