Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.575953). Three words too many (say it in words and you cheat, you cheat the indefinable). This was originally a song, which I wrote back in my tender years, but it also works as an instrumental piece. I have therefore also provided versions on this site for guitar with: flute alto saxophone French horn English horn (cor anglais) clarinet oboe violin. After a gentle introductory major chord arpeggio, the tension of the piece comes into play from the third bar where the melody line holds and repeats an augmented 4th suspension above the guitar. This note then returns as the arpeggio chords change underneath to reveal it as a minor third of a chord related by three degrees of separation from the original - C major to E flat minor. The harmonies and melody continue to sway in their relations in a curious and yet logical progression. I have provided score and parts and also a separate version of the guitar part which provides chord names and fretboard symbols; this would make it useful for educational purposes. The sound sample is performed by the composer.

I was entranced by the poem translated from an ancient rune by the Rev. Kenneth Macleod and I set it to music many years ago, originally calling it The Crofter's Song. ( - see the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6LBAMfAaRk ) it concerns a poor Scottish crofter who welcomes a stranger to his humble croft, feeds and entertains him, and finds blessing, ...for the stranger was Christ. This was one of the first of my songs using the Dorian mode. The following versions are available here The original song for alto and guitar (sound sample performed by the arranger) A version for recorder quartet A version for flute and guitar A version for clarinet and guitar and A more complex version for recorder, guitar, piano and cello.

My how time flies. In 1984 I had my whole life ahead of me. Then I graduated high school, went to the U.S.A.F. Academy, and served a 26 year career as an officer and a pilot in the U.S. Air Force active duty and reserves. Now I look back and wonder where all the time went. I wrote this song to depict how I feel about getting to play the piano again at the ripe old age of 49 after such a long absence. For 26 years I did not have a piano so I did not think about playing. Then my mother in law gave me her piano and it was like reuniting with a long lost friend. I am grateful for any opportunity I have to play now. It makes me feel like I am 18 years old again with my whole life ahead of me. But then I have to wake up from my dream and get back to reality. (2015 Steinway/SMP Piano Contest).

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart, Just As I Am, and Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Breathe on Me, Breath of God, Blest Be the Tie That Binds, and More Love to Thee, O Christ. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.

Brief Vibrations (2010) was written for and is dedicated to Jonathan Mark Roberts. The cycle comprises settings for unaccompanied voice of poems by Elisabeth T. The Vine VI.Vibrations Performance notes: These songs may be performed by any vocalists of any voice type or sex. They may also be performed in any transposition. However, all songs performed must be transposed in exactly the same manner. Though a performance of all six songs is highly preferred, smaller groupings or individual songs may be performed, particularly if the performance is not in concert. Throughout all songs, exceptional sensitivity, expressivity, and freedom is necessary to project a compelling performance. There should never be any sense of metronomic rigidity. The music serves to express and declaim the text, and this should be the driving force in shaping any interpretation.
