Published by Olt Music (A0.759466). I recently found a work from a Danish composer that was a contemporary of Ewald. This was for 4 players, so I adapted it for tuba quartet. It sounds very reminiscent of the writing of Ewald and Maurer, so it has the potential to serve much as those do for the quintet rep. The work is 4 movements and lasts about 13 minutes with breaks between movements.

Love concurs with a beautifully melodic ending. The Quest is a challenging and worthy contribution to the literature. It is suitable for advanced college or professional players. It is harmonically advanced, yet united by its programmatic elements and musical form. Soon after I began realizing that concerti written with tuba-euphonium quartet as the supporting ensemble were extremely rare (and possibly non-existent). Ideal for soloists visiting schools with resident quartets this piece is an attempt to fill a gap in the literature. It is also ideal for larger ensembles.Each movement is connected by manipulations of the motive F, A-flat, and B-flat. Of the plethora of options the relationships between these notes presented I used the minor third and the upper or lower neighbor tones the most frequently, whether it be hidden inside the themes or outlining the work’s largest structures.- Matthew NunesWindsor, September 2015.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

A one movement work in several sections. It begins with a fanfare section that is followed by an Allegro in 5/8. A second lyrical theme in mostly 7/4 and 5/4 follows. This leads to a return of the Allegro 5/8 before transitioning into a moderate 6/8. The fanfare section returns briefly before the 5/8 coda. The language is tonal with some passing dissonance.

Ciacona (original key of F minor for organ) has been beautifully arranged for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet in G minor by Mark LaFratta. It is likely Pachelbel?s second most famous work, after the Kanon in D. As is typical for a Ciacona (Chaconne), there is a short simple tune in triple meter over a repeating bass ostinato that provides a vehicle for variation, ornamentation, and melodic invention and is somewhat similar to a passacaglia. There is a passage or two that even have hints of Bach's great Passacaglia, which didn't appear for many years in the future.
Pachelbel's Ciacona states an opening theme followed by 22 variations, the last of which is an almost exact repeat of the opening theme.
This fantastic 8-minute arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is scored for 2 Euphoniums and 2 Tubas.
