This song was performed by the Beatles on Our World, the first live global television link; the BBC had commissioned the Beatles to write a song for the United Kingdom's contribution. Recorded in 1967, it had Lennon playing harpsichord, Paul McCartney on double bass, George Harrison on violin (an instrument he had never previously played), and Ringo Starr on drums, plus vocals, piano (played by their producer, George Martin), banjo (by Lennon), guitar and orchestral parts. The song has dramatic time changes and some unusual use of harmony. I have presented it here to work well as a tuba quartet arrangement.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

As the title suggests, this piece tells the tail of the three main characters (the Princess, Prince and the Evil Witch) The theme of each character is introduced and then the battle to save the Princess commences. Love concurs with a beautifully melodic ending. The Quest is a challenging and worthy contribution to the literature. It is suitable for advanced college or professional players. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755012). This work was commissioned by the Euphouria Quartet. The composition reflects the composer's feelings about the tragic events of that fateful day. The first movement, Fanfares To Fallen Heroes, is a tribute to the brave firemen, policemen and rescue workers who tirelessly and fearlessly risked and sacrificed their lives in order to save the lives of others. The movement is permeated with fanfare motives that reflect both the bravery displayed and the danger that these people faced. The second movement, Elegy To The Innocent, is a tribute to all the innocent victims and their loved ones who have suffered at the hands of the terrorists. The outer sections have a dirge-like rhythm underpinning a sorrowful melody. The middle section contrasts the dirge by giving a sense of comfort to all that have suffered. The third movement, Justice, represents the struggle and resolve of the United States of America and its allies to eliminate terrorism. Battle motives alternate with a heroic theme throughout the movement. The last movement, Prayer For Peace, represents a hope that all the people of the world can achieve the tolerance and understanding we need to live in harmony and in a civilized manner. The chaconne form is used to represent the uniting of voices as the prayer grows in intensity from beginning to end. A recording by the Euphouria Quartet is available on an Emeritus Recordings CD entitled Echoes – Music for Tuba and Euphonium Ensembles by Sy Brandon and Mark Scott.
