Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1322399). These pieces were inspired by the whales and by Leon Bosch's playing and enthusiasm. I have tried to edit or transcribe each of these two humpback whale songs for doublebass. The first is based on a youtube video Humpback Whale Orchestrated Vocalisations: Alexander Liebermann offers a notated version of this male's song which can be seen while playing the video. I could not find tonality, but there are recurring motifs with slight variations.The second song sounds more like F major moving to Bb. I tried to transcribe the early phrases of a 30-minute song recorded off Hawaii in 1998.The later sounds are less positive and I ignored them.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: Virtuoso doublebass (extension not required).

The inspiration for my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) was Fauré's Requiem in which he ignored the fire and brimstone text of the Dies irae and Tuba mirum in the Sequence of the Requiem Mass. And consequently he created a work that is peaceful, tranquil and uplifting. I'd like to think of death in that way.So, I proceeded by taking the exact text that Fauré used in his work, and instead of a large chorus and full orchestra I decided to do a chamber version. It is scored for SATB (single voices), flute, clarinet, string quartet, double bass and harp.The movements, as in the Fauré, are:1. Introit and Requiem2. Offertory3. Santus 4. Pie Jesu5. Agnus Dei6. Libera me7. In paradisumThe entire work has a duration of ca. 27 minutes.Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) is dedicated to the residents in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.

In my search of octets on YouTube I noticed that there were a number of octets that used a double bass instead of a second cello. I thought that configuration would suit what I had in mind for my octet.Octet for Strings is in five movements.I. AdagioII. Allegro III. AdagioIV. Allegro TRIOV. This solo work unites the double bass with the performer using a musical dialog which ultimately brings the two close together. The story begins with the performer in command of his instrument, then the instrument takes over in command of the performer and in the final section, the two find ways to work together. The score is primarily spatial which leaves the performer much leeway and freedom in his or her interpretation. The contemporary techniques are explained at the beginning of the score. The duration is 8 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price. The work was written for Jon Deak, bassist with the New York Philharmonic.
