It creates such an elegant atmosphere, and people will be so impressed hearing it on the harp. The fingering has been carefully chosen to make it feel as comfortable as possible to play while staying as true as possible to the original. You'll find that a conscious effort is required to keep the right hand relaxed as you play with a long series of overlapping brackets.Difficulty Level and Skills Required: Early-intermediate. The right hand plays the melody with a series of long overlapping brackets. The left hand is simpler often playing 2-3 notes per measure with occasional rolled chords. There are a few lever changes throughout.Type of Harp: For big and small harps, 22 strings (C-C) and larger.Range: The lowest note is D, almost one octave below middle C. The highest note is G, one and a half octaves above middle C.Levers/Pedals: In the key of G major (F levers set to F sharp). A few F lever changes throughout.

Sakura is a famous koto tune from 17th century Japan. It is written in the tuning developed at that time by Yatsuhashi Kengyoo who was a famous performer and teacher of the koto. Hirajoshi, or hira-choshi tuning(choshi = tuning and hira = even, level, tranquil, standard or regular) is an adaptation of traditional Shamisen music.Although often heard with modern western harmonies I have chosen to use only the notes available in this pentatonic tuning. With a harp tuned to Bb major you can play this on the white strings of the harp, making it easy to improvise new left hands or interludes of melody by leaving out your C’s and F’s,This arrangement also includes a version transposed for harps tuned in C or F, to facilitate learning by folks who have not a full set of levers.The first verse is notated with alternating stems to indicate alternating hands. Use the 2nd (or 3, 4, or 5th) finger of each hand and play very close to the soundboard to imitate the koto. by alternating hands you can get close to the soundboard and still connect and phrase the notes by placing one finger before the previous one plays, Use your fingernails if possible - I just grow out the baby finger nails and use those fingers for a change!

My double-strung harp arrangement in the dorian mode has rolled, echoed chords, highlighting the depth of sound we can get from having two sets of strings. The accompaniment hand traverses the entire range of the harp, often overlapping the melody hand.Range and key: D dorian (all naturals). 24x2 strings. C below middle C through E.Lever changes: None.Good for: Performance, memorials, therapeutic settings.Double-strung effects: The LH accompaniment frequently overlaps the RH melody range. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has a few cross-overs/unders.Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. My double-strung harp arrangement in the dorian mode has rolled, echoed chords, highlighting the depth of sound we can get from having two sets of strings. The accompaniment hand traverses the entire range of the harp, often overlapping the melody hand.Key and range: A dorian (one sharp). 21x2 strings. G below middle C through F. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. This short piece allows different interpretations, and it is ideal for early/intermediates Students. It is a very pleasant piece to hear, and due to its flexibility it can be played in recitals and all kinds of other events.
