Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Originally a piano piece, part of a Suite Burlesque, this piece became familiar to many of us as the theme from the weekly tv show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It is a mock funeral march, with a contrasting heroic middle section. The only difficulty is at the end: originally too chromatic altogether, it has been rearranged, but it includes some quick and precise pedalling: C-sharp-natural-flat. This can best be managed by a staccato technique followed by a pedal slide, all in keeping with the character of the piece.

She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. She is the owner of her recording and publishing label Blue Steer Studios(ASCAP) which allows her to combine her composing skills with knowledge of both the business and publishing aspects of music industry. Winner of a Silver Ace Award from the Las Vegas Film Festival she has composed music for all types of media, including Film/TV, web and advertising, and her own personal music in audio CD and sheet music. Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889432). I found this Passacaglia from Bach among some of my own handwritten manuscripts. It is a phenomenal piece. Bach was definitive a great artist, a Genius. Passacaglia is an Italian word. This music form was originated in early 17th-century Spain as a strummed interlude between instrumentally accompanied dances or songs. In this piece we can clearly experience this „Spanish strumming between „Bars 137 and 145. The passacaglia was redefined in the late 1620s by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi, who transformed it into a series of continuous variations over an ostinato bass pattern (which itself may be varied). I added to this piece some interpretation symbols and rearranged it for the harp but every single note was left as it would be found in the original version. The piece is appropriate for advanced performers. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. The piece is difficult but very Human. It requires focused endurance and some practice on certain passages. Once learned you will also be playing much better. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, from a serious concert hall to a marriage, it is perfect for Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events. When performed Live It will give you back a great feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the version in D minor for a concert harp, it was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of this score. Sonata for Harp, Op. 17 was composed out of the desire to write for an instrument I had not previously written for at the time. The themes used throughout the entire sonata are revolved around the limitations of the harp pedals.The first movement, in Bb major, utilizes Sonata-Allegro form and revolves around the dialogue of two themes and constant motion, which are developed further in the development section. Structurally and tonally, the principles of this form, as well as the piece overall, is applied is the same as in a Mozart piece.The second movement, in E major, which is the tritone to Bb, is in ternary form and opens with a melody that represents prayer. Following this prayer is a chorale that gradually becomes more grandiose in nature. A motive of loud planing chords is the answer to this prayer, which is followed by the softer motive that transitions into the next section. The theme is a simple melody containing planing fifths in the left hand, which is accompanied by ornamentation in the right hand. In the final section, a combination of themes, including the initial prayer motive and chorale motive, return and closes the movement.The third movement, in Bb major, is also in ternary form with rondo-esque tendencies. One central theme culminates the final movement of this sonata, which is brought through different tonal centers. Furthermore, it is presented in the form of a waltz in the middle section of the piece. While joyful in nature, there are humorous moments such as terrace dynamics implanted to surprise and keep the listener engaged throughout the movement.I. Allegro giojosoII. Adagio religiosoIII. Nocturne in C-Sharp Minor, written originally for piano by Frederic Francois Chopin. He wrote this piece for his older sister as a practice piece before she started on one of his concertos. This was first published 26 years after Chopin's death. This piece has been re-arranged to be played on a Pedal Harp. A few changes had to be made since it is very difficult to play chromatic scales on the harp. This has been arranged to make those chromatic scales possible. This is a difficult piece to play, but all pedal changes are notated in the music and where they need to happen. Overall a very melancholy, but beautiful piece with a lot of dynamic expression. .

An advanced piece for pedal harp, about 12 minutes long, with lots of melodies and a variety of styles and tempos. It's in western classical harmony and structured as a melodic journey. There are sections with delicate handiwork/hand-work and a little bit of glissandi and pres de la table effects. Three sections in the middle are more extensive, one involving exuberant melodies, another having a waltz-like character, and the central one partly inspired by Weber's Andante and Hungarian Rondo (which I performed on the viola). My goal was to make the piece feel like one great cohesive experience instead of just a lot of little sections, and hopefully you will agree. My other goal was to provide melodies which will delight music-lovers, and package them together in a meaningful way. The PDF also includes composer's notes of musical analysis and the process I went through in writing the piece.

This solo harp arrangement of Arrietty's Song from Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli's film The Secret World of Arrietty is wonderfully versatile, while preserving the key and overall character of Cecile Corbel's original piece. It can be played on a lever harp as small as 26 strings, with the lowest note being the C below middle C and the highest being the third G above middle C. It only requires one lever (the A below middle C) to be moved to effectively simulate the chorus key change. It captures both the iconic original celtic harp part, as well as the full melody (with Japanese lyrics taken into account), and also the building/shifting energy that the original piece achieved by adding additional instruments. I think it also successfully solves the problem of remaining interesting and dynamic throughout despite the song being so repetitive. In short, I am particularly proud of this arrangement.In part because it is so note-y, and because it just keeps moving with no room to rest or breathe, this is definitely one of the harder and more advanced pieces I have arranged for small/lap lever harp. It would still sound nice played under tempo, but you will need to maintain a consistent rhythm throughout. I advise practicing the left hand as blocked chords and paying particular attention to the right-hand octaves in the second rendition of the chorus.Please note that the preview cuts off after the first half-page of score.
