Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Water murmurs softly in the rivers, the wind sings through the treetops, and melodies weave together, wrapping the world in tranquility. Then, suddenly, the sky darkens, and high-pitched notes take control, taming the elements and imposing their rhythm. But soon, the deep notes rise, claiming sovereignty in turn and seizing the forces of nature. Peace tries to return, seeking to restore the harmonies of the beginning, but it falters, hesitant. The ending suggests that everything will need to be reinvented, redefined. Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889432). I found this Passacaglia from Bach among some of my own handwritten manuscripts. It is a phenomenal piece. Bach was definitive a great artist, a Genius. Passacaglia is an Italian word. This music form was originated in early 17th-century Spain as a strummed interlude between instrumentally accompanied dances or songs. In this piece we can clearly experience this „Spanish strumming between „Bars 137 and 145. The passacaglia was redefined in the late 1620s by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi, who transformed it into a series of continuous variations over an ostinato bass pattern (which itself may be varied). I added to this piece some interpretation symbols and rearranged it for the harp but every single note was left as it would be found in the original version. The piece is appropriate for advanced performers. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. The piece is difficult but very Human. It requires focused endurance and some practice on certain passages. Once learned you will also be playing much better. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, from a serious concert hall to a marriage, it is perfect for Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events. When performed Live It will give you back a great feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the version in D minor for a concert harp, it was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of this score. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q15608). Sophia Giustani Dussek's opus 2 consists of two books of three sonatas each for the harp. The Sonata in C minor appears in the first book, published by Pleyel in Paris in 1796. In that book, the composer's first name was not mentioned, so the sonatas were falsely ascribed to Johann Ludwig Dussek, who was quite well known in Paris at that time (cf. RISM, D 4605). In the Thematic index of the works of J.L. Dussek by Howard Craw, opus 2 is given as a set of 4 violin sonatas. An edition of the harp sonatas published by Corri, Dussek and Co. in London and Edinburgh is ascribed to Sophia Dussek (cf. RISM, D 4649). The new edition of the sonata published by Schott has been corrected accordingly. The edition is part of the ABRSM syllabus and Trinity syllabus 2007 (grade 7).

An advanced piece for pedal harp, about 12 minutes long, with lots of melodies and a variety of styles and tempos. It's in western classical harmony and structured as a melodic journey. There are sections with delicate handiwork/hand-work and a little bit of glissandi and pres de la table effects. Three sections in the middle are more extensive, one involving exuberant melodies, another having a waltz-like character, and the central one partly inspired by Weber's Andante and Hungarian Rondo (which I performed on the viola). My goal was to make the piece feel like one great cohesive experience instead of just a lot of little sections, and hopefully you will agree. My other goal was to provide melodies which will delight music-lovers, and package them together in a meaningful way. The PDF also includes composer's notes of musical analysis and the process I went through in writing the piece.

Sonata for Harp, Op. 17 was composed out of the desire to write for an instrument I had not previously written for at the time. The themes used throughout the entire sonata are revolved around the limitations of the harp pedals.The first movement, in Bb major, utilizes Sonata-Allegro form and revolves around the dialogue of two themes and constant motion, which are developed further in the development section. Structurally and tonally, the principles of this form, as well as the piece overall, is applied is the same as in a Mozart piece.The second movement, in E major, which is the tritone to Bb, is in ternary form and opens with a melody that represents prayer. Following this prayer is a chorale that gradually becomes more grandiose in nature. A motive of loud planing chords is the answer to this prayer, which is followed by the softer motive that transitions into the next section. The theme is a simple melody containing planing fifths in the left hand, which is accompanied by ornamentation in the right hand. In the final section, a combination of themes, including the initial prayer motive and chorale motive, return and closes the movement.The third movement, in Bb major, is also in ternary form with rondo-esque tendencies. One central theme culminates the final movement of this sonata, which is brought through different tonal centers. Furthermore, it is presented in the form of a waltz in the middle section of the piece. While joyful in nature, there are humorous moments such as terrace dynamics implanted to surprise and keep the listener engaged throughout the movement.I. Allegro giojosoII. Adagio religiosoIII.
