By tuning to an Eb major scale, great harmonic capabilities outside the key signature are available with correctly spelled chords. Accidentals of both flat and sharp keys are accessible when needed, enharmonic spellings are greatly reduced. Covers calibrating the electronic tuner, using an external microphone, tuning to Eb major, tuning the entire harp using the circle of fifths, playing the major scale and seven diatonic triads in each of eight keys, and playing a comparison of major, minor and diminished chords on each step of the scale in the keys of Eb, Bb, F, C, D, A, and E major.

Harpation is a trilogy of solo harp pieces based on a whole-tone scale. It is available in two tuning versions, Eb major and C major, in order to accommodate the most common tunings used by folk harpers. (Harpers who tune in Bb may also use the Eb version.) Pedal harpists may use either tuning, although Eb is recommended for a richer sound. In addition to being interesting selections for pleasure or performance, these pieces teach students contemporary harp techniques in an enjoyable way. Each piece makes an interesting duet if two harps alternate some measures (or sections) in a kind of echo effect. In addition, an ensemble of harpers or harpists may play the entire trilogy simultaneously.The total range required to play all pieces (in both keys) is four and one-half octaves, from low C to high G (33 strings). All harmonics are to be played on the string indicated and not down the octave. Metronome markings are approximations only. Feel free to use choose your own tempos or re-arrange each selection to your liking.

Intermediate level, well-marked, some fingerings added. Left hand is consistent with eighth note arpeggios or scale patterns, not difficult. Right hand is a lyric melody, single note throughout except for an uplifting section of parallel 6ths.

The fingering and lever changes have been carefully chosen and timed to make the piece as comfortable as possible to play. However, you'll find that the right hand is quite taxing and requires concentration to play accurately while staying relaxed!Difficulty Level and Skills Required: Late-intermediate. The right hand plays the melody with a series of long overlapping brackets, scales, and rolled chords. The left hand is less busy, playing many octaves, 10th interval rolled chords, and lever changes.Type of Harp: The big harp version is for 33 strings and larger, but the small harp version works for 26 strings and larger.Range: For big harps: The lowest note is C, two octaves below middle C. The highest note is A, one and a half octaves above middle C. For small harps: The lowest note is C. below middle C. The highest note is G, two and a half octaves above middle C.Levers/Pedals: In the key of G major (F levers set to F sharp). Several F, B, G, and C lever changes throughout.
