An original composition<br> In dorian mode. Very much in folk song style<br> Inspired by animal welfare<br> Lovely arrangement. Quite easy.<br> Has impovised section in middle<br> The original lyrics are:<br> <br> The Horse of Beckmann’s Mill<br> <br> <br> <br> Pray, have you seen that chestnut foal o'er there uponthe hill?<br> <br> The finest foal you've ever seen was born at Beckmann'sMill.<br> <br> They let her play within her yard, tie ribbons in hermane,<br> <br> They train her to the grinding stone that crushes up thegrain.<br> <br> Now many times I've thought about that foal at Beckmann'sMill,<br> <br> And many times I've wondered how that man can do so ill.<br> <br> They use you up, they throw you out and turn their backsin scorn.<br> <br> All because by chance it came to be the place where youwere born.<br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> Pray, have you seen that chestnut filly o'er there besidethe hill?<br> <br> The finest filly you're ever seen was worked at Beckmann'sMill.<br> <br> They drive her from the morning sun until it's very late,<br> <br> They thrash her hard to pull the wheel that's bonded toher fate.<br> <br> Now many times I've passed her by and oft I've turned myface.<br> <br> Yet many times I've wondered what if I were in her place.<br> <br> They take advantage of the young and those without avoice.<br> <br> And it seems to me that nowhere did she really have achoice.<br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> Pray, have you seen that chestnut mare o'er there underthe hill?<br> <br> The finest mare you've ever seen has died at Beckmann'sMill.<br> <br> One day she fell upon her kness, the man he brought hisknife.<br> <br> The tread mill won the battle, and the miller took herlife.<br> <br> Now many times I've thought about the mare at Beckman'sMill,<br> <br> And many times I've wondered how that man can do so ill.<br> <br> They use you up, they throw you out and train anotherfoal,<br> <br> Yet every death they cause will leave a stain upon theirsoul.An original composition<br> In dorian mode. Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

So Turlough did what any sane man would do: he got a second opinion. He consulted Dr. John Stafford who wrote him a prescription (in those days it was called a receipt) for whiskey, and it return O'Carolan wrote this. .

The Children's Album is dedicated to Tchaikovsky's favorite nephew, Vladimir Davydov. On 12/24 December 1878, Tchaikovsky wrote to Lev Davydov: "Tell Bobik that the music has been printed with pictures, that the music was composed by Uncle Petya, and that on it is written Dedicated to Volodya Davydov. The silly little fellow will not understand what dedicated means... Even so, Bobik is an inimitably delightful figure when he's playing, and he might look at the notes, and think that a whole symphony is dedicated to him“.<br> <br> In a letter of 30 April/12 May 1878 to Nadezhda von Meck, the composer wrote: "A while ago I thought that it would not be a bad idea to make a small contribution to the stock of children's musical literature, which is very modest. I want to create a series of little individual pieces just for children, and with an attractive title, like Schumann`s.<br> <br> Some months before this letter was written, while staying in Florence on 14/26 February, Tchaikovsky told Pyotr Jurgenson that he wanted "to write a number of easy pieces, like Kinderstück“. Evidently, the idea of creating a collection of pieces for young people had not been abandoned by the composer, and after his return to Kamenka in April he decided to begin composition. In the aforementioned letter to Nadezhda von Meck, he informed her: "Tomorrow I shall start working on my collection of miniatures for children".<br> <br> On 1/13 May the composer wrote to Anatoly Tchaikovsky: "I'm working well and have done rather a lot". On 4/16 May the sketches for all 24 pieces were ready. Shortly afterwards, Tchaikovsky accepted an invitation from Nadezhda von Meck to stay at her Brailov estate until the end of May/beginning of June, before spending a few days in Moscow; from there he went to spend five days with his friend Nikolay Kondratyev at Nizy, and in mid/late June he called at Kiev, before returning to Verbovka. Published by O'Meara Music (A0.803721). In 1889 Johann Strauss, Jr. gave his Berlin publisher, Fritz Simrock, a new waltz entitled Hand in Hand. It was a celebration of the toast made by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I during a visit to German Kaiser Wilhelm II. The toast stressed the necessity of bonds of friendship between the two nations. Mr Simrock suggested changing the title to Kaiser-Waltzer to please the two emperors. However, when it was published, only the Austrian Imperial crown was emblazoned on the title page! This stunning arrangement has both a pedal harp and lever harp version that is intended to be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and an occasional harmony note. The dynamics are clearly marked. The Harp Ensemble would perform for 2 hours each evening as guests arrived at the UW-Eau Claire’s annual Viennese Ball in the student center (1998-2016). The invitation was extended due to the fact that Eduard Strauss, the youngest Strauss, was a harpist. He conducted his own orchestra from his harp and toured the United States.

Growing Toward the Light is a collection of pieces that Carol Wood began working on in a period of great sadness, when she and her husband discovered he was suffering from a kind of dementia similar to Alzheimer’s. Only a few of the thirteen pieces in the collection reflect the heartbreak and grief that followed, but, as Carol writes in her introduction, many musical friends encouraged her to try to keep playing and composing. Several of the pieces are dedicated to these friends, and many celebrate the beauty of trees or snow or even sleep. All the pieces are written in keys requiring no more than one sharp, and all are playable on full-sized lever harp or pedal harp.
