Perform this original work of Celtic Irish setting from her CD (Gypsy Road,2012) scored for harp ensemble of intermediate to advanced players.  Scored in E minor with no lever changes it features a creative slip-jig with lush and effective harmonies.  A rare opportunity to showcase programmatic skills for the harp ensemble.  The dark and mysterious musical message will touch the hearts of all who hear it.About the CompositionI wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. She is the owner of her recording and publishing label Blue Steer Studios(ASCAP) which allows her to combine her composing skills with knowledge of both the business and publishing aspects of music industry. Winner of a Silver Ace Award from the Las Vegas Film Festival she has composed music for all types of media, including Film/TV, web and advertising, and her own personal music in audio CD and sheet music. In 2021 she took time off from composing to relocate her studio to Eastern Washington (Spokane) and is now getting started on new projects and pursuing music composition full time. It creates such a graceful, contemplative atmosphere, perfect for performing in churches, weddings, or simply for your enjoyment. The fingering and lever changes have been carefully chosen and timed to make the piece as comfortable as possible to play. However, you'll find that the right hand is quite taxing and requires concentration to play accurately while staying relaxed!Difficulty Level and Skills Required: Late-intermediate. The right hand plays the melody with a series of long overlapping brackets, scales, and rolled chords. The left hand is less busy, playing many octaves, 10th interval rolled chords, and lever changes.Type of Harp: The big harp version is for 33 strings and larger, but the small harp version works for 26 strings and larger.Range: For big harps: The lowest note is C, two octaves below middle C. The highest note is A, one and a half octaves above middle C. For small harps: The lowest note is C. below middle C. The highest note is G, two and a half octaves above middle C.Levers/Pedals: In the key of G major (F levers set to F sharp). Several F, B, G, and C lever changes throughout. I like to think it gives spooky filmscore / Wednesday Addams vibes, with a neoclassical air, while still remaining very accessible to a less-experienced musician with a small, simple, or budget instrument.It is in the key of A minor (i.e. no sharps or flats) with no lever changes. It should also already fit the range of most common small harp models, including Harpsicle harps (even if your model has no levers!), Roosebeck Pakistani harps (it goes no lower than the F below middle C), Harp-E harps (it goes no higher than your high E), Dusty Strings Ravenna, Musicmakers Sonnet Lap Harp, and others. It can also, obviously, be played on any and all larger harp models.Played at full-speed, some of the turn-arounds in the right-hand, as well as the octave jump in the middle, can prove tricky (as you can see from my own playing in the video!). But played under tempo and more expressively, it could be accessible even to beginner/early-intermediate harpists, so long as you are learning to replace fingers and change directions.Please note that the preview cuts off after the first half-page of score. When you download your purchase, you will recieve a pdf that contains both the preview and the full score.Also note: If the preview shows a 4/4 timing, this is a software rendering error. Sakura is a famous koto tune from 17th century Japan. It is written in the tuning developed at that time by Yatsuhashi Kengyoo who was a famous performer and teacher of the koto. Hirajoshi, or hira-choshi tuning(choshi = tuning and hira = even, level, tranquil, standard or regular) is an adaptation of traditional Shamisen music.Although often heard with modern western harmonies I have chosen to use only the notes available in this pentatonic tuning. With a harp tuned to Bb major you can play this on the white strings of the harp, making it easy to improvise new left hands or interludes of melody by leaving out your C’s and F’s,This arrangement also includes a version transposed for harps tuned in C or F, to facilitate learning by folks who have not a full set of levers.The first verse is notated with alternating stems to indicate alternating hands. Use the 2nd (or 3, 4, or 5th) finger of each hand and play very close to the soundboard to imitate the koto. by alternating hands you can get close to the soundboard and still connect and phrase the notes by placing one finger before the previous one plays, Use your fingernails if possible - I just grow out the baby finger nails and use those fingers for a change!

It is written in A minor, with no sharps, flats, or other lever changes. As such, this piece should be playable on pretty much any standard small or lap harp, regardless of whether it has levers.Suggested harp models include Harpsicle Harps, Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, Musicmakers Sonnet 29, Fireside Harps, Marini Made lap harp models, Roosebeck Pakistani harps, Heartland Harps Air Serenity, Harp-E harps, and so on.The piece was composed to cheer up a fellow harpist who is still at the beginning of their harp journey. It is meant to invoke a medieval castle, and, as such, could be the perfect piece to take to a renaissance fair, an outdoor wedding, a larp-ing event, or perhaps on vacation with you, if you plan on touring any old castles with your small/lap harp in tow and trying out the acoustics.The song is appropriate for beginner harpists. You may need to practice replacing in a few places to avoid buzzing. But the piece only ever requires you to place in one direction at a time and minimizes the amount of time both hands play simultaneously.
