These ensembles, Danny Boy and The Harp That Once Thro' Tara's Halls, are accessible to many harp sizes, and to playing levers from rank beginning to intermediate, so that all your harping friends can play with you. If a duo is all you can muster, Parts One and Two make complete pieces. Parts Three and Four add harmonic, rhythmic and/or tonal richness. There are also beginner parts with each piece. When there are enough players, it helps to double the melody. All parts are written for two hands, but less advanced players may wish to play one hand as marked in many parts. There are rehearsal numbers every five measures to make it easier for everyone to be in the same place.

Harpation is a trilogy of solo harp pieces based on a whole-tone scale. It is available in two tuning versions, Eb major and C major, in order to accommodate the most common tunings used by folk harpers. (Harpers who tune in Bb may also use the Eb version.) Pedal harpists may use either tuning, although Eb is recommended for a richer sound. In addition to being interesting selections for pleasure or performance, these pieces teach students contemporary harp techniques in an enjoyable way. Each piece makes an interesting duet if two harps alternate some measures (or sections) in a kind of echo effect. In addition, an ensemble of harpers or harpists may play the entire trilogy simultaneously.The total range required to play all pieces (in both keys) is four and one-half octaves, from low C to high G (33 strings). All harmonics are to be played on the string indicated and not down the octave. Metronome markings are approximations only. Feel free to use choose your own tempos or re-arrange each selection to your liking.

Modern interpretations of early music. Although originally intended to be performed as duets, the pieces can also work nicely as solos by playing the harp 1 part and omitting Harp 2. The Highlander's Farewell to Ireland is a wire harp solo. Designations gut or nylon harp and Celtic harp are interchangeable; the gut or nylon distinction is made in pieces that call for wire-strung harp as Harp II in order to clarify the need for the two distinct sound colors. Harmonics are played where written. Fingerings are generally omitted except for damping suggestions in The Highlander's Farewell. This book contains only the score, with harp 1 and harp 2 on the same page. Page turns have been adjusted so they are as easy as possible.

The right hand plays the melody with a series of long overlapping brackets, scales, and rolled chords. The left hand is less busy, playing many octaves, 10th interval rolled chords, and lever changes.Type of Harp: The big harp version is for 33 strings and larger, but the small harp version works for 26 strings and larger.Range: For big harps: The lowest note is C, two octaves below middle C. These are two beautiful O'Carolan tunes which go very well together. They are both in 6/8 so jig-time. The first should be played a little slower than the second. They are in the key of G, though the second tune is in a modal key. One only needs the F sharp lever. There are no key changes. These pieces have fingering throughout (optional) and some dynamics (optional). Because of the speed of the second jig I reckon one should be of intermediate ability to play this well. Of course with different fingering one could play this on the piano as well.
