Shield's Trios, written for a continental audience, are seminal works in the composer's output and mark a new level of compositional attainment in the English chamber music repertory. Technically, they contain a wide variety of ideas which are developed with great ingenuity through a wide range of keys, dynamic contrasts and timbral effects. Aesthetically, they blend 'popular' and 'learned' taste along with 'orchestral' splendour and 18th century notions of beauty. The Trios present a dazzling range of moods and style with each work demonstrating Shield's mastery of the idiom, both in his treatment of individual instruments and in the handling of textures. While there is no shortage of melody and accompaniment, in which the violin takes the lead, there are many memorable solos for the viola and the cello in its high register. The wide range of textures includes melodic decoration, dialogue, contrast of high and low register, legato and staccato, powerful unison and double octaves. Shield's ability to incorporate arioso-like melody, the prevailing 'symphonic' style and folk elements was largely achieved through the cross-generic requirements of English comic opera (a form to which Shield devoted himself during the whole of his creative career). In general, Shield's technique results in a firm control of the way music moves - with sometimes a surprising degree of stylistic restlessness and sometimes of unexpected plainness and simplicity. The trios Shield selected for publication were issued by Longman and Broderip, London, in January 1796 under the inspection of the composer. No autograph of these works survives and Longman and Broderip's printing, a copy of which is preserved in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, under the call number Mus.Instr.I 214(15), is the only source of this edition. The title page, with its dedicatory inscription, reads: Six / TRIOS / FOR / Violin, Tenor and Violoncello, / Composed / And Inscribed to the Memory of / Jacob More Esqr. / By / Wm. SHIELD./ (Musician in Ordinary to His Majesty) / Entd. At Statn. Hall [rule] Price 10/6 / ADVERTISEMENT / These Trios were Composed chiefly for the abovementioned Celebrated Landscape Painter (in Rome) / And are Dedicated to his Memory as a Token of Gratitude for the Services he rendered the Author / during his Residence in that City. The movements which are written in the uncommon Time / of 5/4 have amused some of the most distinguished Professors both in England & Italy which / induces the Author to hope they will not be disagreeable to the Public at Large / Goodge Street, Jany. 1st 1796 / [rule] / London, Printed for the Author by Longman & Broderip, No.26, Cheapside & No.13, Haymarket. Shield's three previously unpublished string trios are preserved in autograph score in the British Library under the call number Ms.Add.51015; they provide the only source for this edition. This present edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of these sources. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. The notation of appoggiature has also been standardised to minimise confusion. Romance Anónimo (Anonymous Romance) is a piece for guitar, also known as Estudio en Mi de Rubira (Study in E by Rubira), Spanish Romance, Romance de España, Romance de Amor, Romance of the Guitar, Romanza and Romance d'Amour among other names.Its origins and authorship are currently in question. It is suspected of originally being a solo instrumental guitar work, from the 19th century. It has variously been attributed to Antonio Rubira, David del Castillo, Francisco Tárrega, Fernando Sor, Daniel Fortea, Miguel Llobet, Antonio Cano, Vicente Gómez, and Narciso Yepes. The Anónimo (anonymous) part of its name has been incorporated over the years due to this uncertainty. The question of authorship has probably been propagated by three main reasons: the lack of claim by its true author, the desire to avoid paying copyright fees, and the desire of publishing companies to claim the lucrative copyright of this world-famous piece.The style of the piece is that of the Parlour music of the late 19th century in Spain or South America, having a closed three-part form: the first in the minor key and the second being in the major key, with the third being a restatement of the first.Narciso Yepes (1927 - 1997) interpreted and is listed as the author of the piece in René Clément's 1952 film Jeux interdits (Forbidden Games). The popularity of the film gave the piece worldwide fame. Yepes currently has the copyright of this composition in Spain although recordings and manuscripts of this song predate 1952. Newer publications show Yepes as the arranger and the piece being of anonymous authorship, or authored by Fernando Sor.The official statement from Narciso Yepes and the Yepes heirs is that Narciso Yepes, being a young boy, originally composed the piece for his mother when he was about seven years old (c.1934) and soon thereafter performed it between acts at the Teatro Guerra, in Lorca, Spain. Some time later, he recounts, when he was thirteen years old he attended a performance in Valencia and heard his composition performed by another guitarist, who indicated the authorship as anonymous. Yepes contends that the melody had been plagiarized (with some changes to the arrangement) by someone who, he assumes, must have attended that first performance. However, Yepes was born 1927 and cannot be the author of the work, since it was already recorded in 1900 and published before 1925 (possibly 1913) by J.A. MEDINA e HIJO; and in 1919 in themethod of Pedro Mascaró y Reissig, etc. Vicente Gomez (1911-2001) published it and performed it in 1941 in the Hollywood movie Blood and Sand with Tyrone Powerand Rita Hayworth, also attributing authorship of the song to himself. Anyway, the piano arrangement of the brilliant Shigeo Ida caught my attention and I decided to rework it somewhat into this trio for strings. Enjoy!

My arrangement takes it from a 60's pop song to a gentle jazz ballad. It is totally reharmonized and has a fresh new feel. The melody is the same, except it has a new Time Signature. The song was originally in 6/8 but I have set it in 1/2 in order to get the pulse and phrasing I want. (Yes, 1 minim/half note per bar.) The original accompaniment was broken arpeggios, but now it is all about the rich new blocked chords. With repeats and a D.S. I have covered all 4 verses and bridges. Enjoy a fresh take on this forever classic. This is the premier performance of Glacier Bay by String Trio Black Diamonds - just one day after Arthur Breur composed the piece and provided the trio with the score and parts. They performed the piece in the atrium of the Norwegian Sun on July 3, 2016. With gratitude to Captain Richard Svardmark and the entire crew of the Norwegian Sun. Arthur Breur composed Glacier Bay in a single day on the Cruise Ship Norwegian Sun as it toured Glacier Bay, Alaska. Waking very early that day, Arthur was greeted with foggy, gray, mysterious views in an eerie northern twilight, and the mood set him immediately to composing. As he often does, he started by constructing the ten letters of the name Glacier Bay into musical notes. He divided these ten notes into three similar musical motifs, first three notes [G-E-A], then four notes [C-B-E-D], then three notes again [B-A-D]. These motifs open the piece, in a section that represents the eerie, misty, wet, half-lit morning. Then-expressing wonder and excitement upon seeing the beauty and majesty of Alaska’s glaciers-the motifs are connected with moving lines of notes that turn the original disconnected motifs into a flowing, uplifting melody. Between stops at the enormous bay’s different glaciers, the ship moved slowly through foggy vistas. The middle section of the piece represents this with a more dissonant, nervous sound. (Listen carefully for the sound of the ship’s fog horn-which really is a low F-sharp!-played by the cello.) But after passing through the fog, there was another awe-inspiring glacier, and so the music returns to the uplifting, flowing melody once again. It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious piano sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument.The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form, characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. According to Mozart's letters to his father, Dürnitz played the flute very well, and Mozart was impressed by his abilities. It is believed that Mozart composed this sonata specifically for Dürnitz, who may have performed it with Mozart accompanying him on the piano.There is no concrete evidence to support the theory that the sonata was named after Dürnitz, but it is widely accepted as the most likely explanation for the nickname. The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by the violin with many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl (Viola) sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The Cello has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Viola) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother (Violin) knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. And D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Violin: I do not know its name. Then E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. The Violin has the melody. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. Players will choose. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. The phrase Gloria in Excelsis Deo is a memorable feature of the chorus, where the o of Gloria is fluidly sustained through 16 notes of a rising and falling melismatic. The carol commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke, specifically the scene outside Bethlehem where shepherds encounter many angels singing and praising the newborn child. The Gloria is believed to have inspired the chorus in Angels We Have Heard on High, it is considered one of the earliest known Christmas hymns. The melody uses the effect of a refrain and is one of the few texts that congregations sing regularly in Latin: Gloria in excelsis Deo!. The phrase Gloria has a rich history, with reports indicating that in 129 A.D., Pope Telesphorus ordained that the Gloria be sung at the Christmas Eve midnight mass. The melody has been popularized worldwide and has become a holiday standard.
