One cannot often find the origin of a folk tune or a definitive form, and bewares of modern arrangements( mine too!) The REFRAIN is Kolomeike, кoлoмийкa, a very quick duple-time dance tune, with a variable scale, popular in Ukraine for weddings and other festive occasions, often led by the violin with many smears. EPISODES are mostly sad love-songs: A. Чом ти не прийшов: a girl (Viola) sings Why did you not come and meet me in the moonlight? Wouldn't your mother let you? Dorian mode. B. Slow Waltz: I have seen this with G major accompaniment, but I have used G mixolydian: a popular mode in Ukraine.The Cello has the melody. C. O, in the cherry orchard Ой, у Вишневому Саду. A girl (Viola) sings that she begged her boyfriend to take her home from the orchard, as it was late, but he took a different girl. Mother (Violin) knows what has been going on, but is sympathetic. G minor. And D Tanietz: a very fast dance tune led by the Violin: I do not know its name. Then E a reprise of the Cherry Orchard. F.Ти ж мене підманула You tricked me and let me down. The Violin has the melody. I have seen and heard this sung cheerfully and very fast, but its lyrics are really sad. Players will choose. The basic melody was attributed to Semen Klimovski. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Pleyel's three Trios Concertants, as they are styled in the earliest extant editions, appeared in 1787. Unlike the composer's quartets and quintets, which are generally in three movements, the string trios are cast in two movements - an opening Allegro and a Rondo - a practice unusual in Vienna but popular in France. The use of the term 'concertant' in the title signifies an equality of parts; that is, each of the instruments in the ensemble plays an important role in presenting thematic material. Pleyel's trios share many stylistic qualities with his quartets and quintets. His feel for the medium is at once apparent in his impressive exploitation of contrasting musical textures which range from bold, homophonic writing in a quasi-orchestral style to brief sections of canonic writing. The beauty and sophistication of these small-scale works can only make one regret that he did not write more works in the medium. Allan Badley.

Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903776). CONFUCIUS SAID: STRING TRIO violin, viola, cello. An interpretation of some of the annual ceremonial music honouring the great Chinese philosopher. Quotations of his sayings about music are included, for a performer to speak. This piece is inspired by the Confucius Birthday Ceremony, probably dating from the Chou Dynasty, 1046-221BCE.  The music, called Shao Music, has been played in all its magnificence since then. The event is highly choreographed and controlled musically, aiming to reflect and celebrate Confucius' philosphies of peace. Traditional Chinese music is primarily melodic, and western ears may feel the lack of harmonic richness. A player should read out the Confucius quotation at the beginning of each movement.   How to play... The melody and some of the bass line consists of the rows of pitch-classes in verses 1 and 2 of Honouring Confucius (Ta Tsai Kung-Tzu)  I have introduced rhythmic variety, harmony and some phasing and use the traditional pentatonic scale as rendered by the Chinese classical music instruments-drums, bells, flutes, and strings. The flute symbolises balance.  A man without...is a very short saraband, a courtly dance using all the pitches of verse 2 in order, with the strings muted.   It was by music... uses major triad fanfares where possible, with an occasional portamento.  Music produces a special... is a sensuous waltz: as with most of the movements, I have shamelessly used a tonal harmony under the notes of verse 4 (illustrated).  When music and courtesy... plays the notes of Verse 6 in quintuple time over a drone.  If one should desire...is a barefoot parade (gymnopedie?) in Satie's style.    Duration 7 minutes. The last movement of this Piano Sonata:Alla Turca, popularly known as the Turkish March, is often heard on its own and is one of Mozart's best-known piano pieces; it was Mozart himself who titled the rondo Alla Turca. It imitates the sound of Turkish Janissary bands, the music of which was much in vogue at that time. Various other works of the time imitate this Turkish style, including Mozart's own opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail. In Mozart's time, the last movement was sometimes performed on pianos built with a Turkish stop, allowing it to be embellished with extra percussion effects. I have have added additional voicings throughout. The end section has an optional 8va for the 1st player...this will give the authentic Turkish feel, if you're brave enough to do it....LOUD!! Plenty of scales for 1st and 2nd, but fun for all the players!! Arranged for violin, viola and cello with alternative parts for 2.viola (2.vln) and 2.cello (3.vla)
