This song was written for the Total Eclipse which was seen April 2024 across a large section of the North American continent from Mexico through the United States and into Canada. This music creates the feel and experience of the total eclipse. It expressively drifts from minor to major to modal every few measures as it explores the themes of darkness and light, terror and excitement. It should be performed with a bit of edginess to portray the historical anxiety of the event. The upper three instrument parts are kept very low in their range to give a darker tone. All string parts have some occasional double stopping. This unique but approachable piece of art music is a fusion of Romantic, Classical, and Modern styles, great for any concert or recital that needs something special and different, (and perhaps a bit haunting). Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Andante.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are pretty typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.The Bagatelle No. 4 of Op. 33 by Beethoven is a sentimental Andante set in ternary form. The piece is cast in the key of A major. The first section of the piece is characterized by a simple tuneful melody that is repeated throughout the section. The second section is in the parallel homotonic minor key of A minor and features a more dramatic and intensely brooding harmonic sequence with no actual melody. It’s like a thunderstorm threatening to upset a picnic, but no real damage was done. The third section brings us back to our optimistic A major environment and develops the melody through artful variation. The piece ends with a brief codetta featuring octave displacement. Overall, the piece is an excellent example of Beethoven's ability to create a memorable melody, and a contrasting harmonic sequence, and develop these in a short amount of time.

The beginning is just a rocking back and forth between an E flat major chord to a C major chord although neither are in root position. Above this chordal ostinato the Solo Violin soars on several different modes and has an interesting quintuplet rhythm against the accompaniment. In the second part the upper voices rock back and forth to mostly major triads above a pizzicato cello. The fourth section introduces a compound meter feel (triplets) and melodic fragments that is volleyed from part to part. The fifth section has the upper strings on a glassy harmonic that mirrors the opening rocking chords. This time a Solo cello takes the melody in a high tessitura. The next section echos the second section but is transposed a third lower. The transition expires a rocking back and between the E flat major and E flat minor obstinato before settling in on a bookend of the opening with a ever so slightly extended ending. Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

This is a couple of quartets for two violins, viola, and violoncello obbligato. One may think these are ordinary string quartets, where the first violin has all the fun and the other three players share the remaining bits, but one would be gravely mistaken. The clue for this is the dedication by Dotzauer to his teacher, Bernhard Romberg. Then we have the word “obbligato†marking the prominence of the cello part over the others. They are entertaining pieces, about 25-minutes-long each, in four movements, and similar to Haydn in style. These are the first two of Dotzauer’s generous production of string quartets (more than twenty!). The first is in E-flat major, while the second is in G minor, a curious choice for sure. This edition comes in digital and print, both including the same material, a score and a set of four parts.

Drawing inspiration from Psalm 29, the piece focuses upon the following text: Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. While the piece begins with an Aeolian mode melody, as played by the cello, the music quickly shifts to the major key at measure nine bringing with it a sense of optimism. A return to the inspiration of the opening lines of the psalm, at measure seventeen, introduces an additional melody. Enhanced through warm rich harmonies we now hear the fullness of the entire ensemble. A change in mood felt at measure thirty conveys reverence, as the music suddenly softens and beckons us to... Worship the Lord in beauty of holiness. The melody first introduced in measure nine, along with its optimism, reappears at measure thirty seven and then returns to the opening melody at measure forty three, now played in a lush string harmony. The same shift in mood felt at measure thirty appears in measure sixty three though a subtle change to the music is made; a shift to the minor key is used instead of a major key adding a sense of drama to the music. At measure sixty-nine a reprise of the opening melody leads to the glorious ending of hope and peace as the psalmist intended. The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace
