Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1447120). Soon after moving to Vienna in 1781, Mozart wrote what turned out to be his last, and finest, three serenades for wind ensemble. He himself arranged the one in c minor, Köchel 388, for string quintet (2 violins, 2 violas and cello), and that version is known as K. 406. Most of the serenade in B-Flat Major, K 361, sometimes called Gran Partita or Serenade for 13 Instruments, was also arranged for the same quintet combination, apparently by someone else, with the movements divided up between Quintets No. 6 and 7 in the second volume of the standard Peters Edition set of parts for Mozart’s string quintets. The remaining serenade, K. 375, is appearing in a string quintet arrangement for the first time that I know of. While it does not have the dramatic intensity of K. 388/406 or the grand sweep of K. 361, it is a worthy companion to the other two works. He composed it “carefully”, as he explained in a letter to his father, and the piece is full of striking details that show this. In the first movement, the second subject is surprisingly in a dark minor key, and the development is based on it. But it does not appear in the recapitulation, replaced instead by a new major key theme. The first of the two minuets also has a brooding trio in minor. The heart of the work is the Adagio, one of Mozart’s great slow movements, and it should be better known. The long-spun overlapping melodies work particularly well for strings. The finale starts as a conventional Rondo, but breaks off into an extended fugal section (again starting in a minor key!) that gives the movement weight and power beyond a typical formula rondo. This arrangement transposes the original E-Flat Major to D Major, to take advantage of string sonority while making some of the passage work lie better for the instruments. Score and parts follow the current convention of listing the composer’s middle name as Amadeus, even though he did not favor it: His only recorded use was a letter he signed Wolfgangus Amadeus Mozartus, clearly intended as a joke. He preferred the Italian or French versions, Amadeo or Amadé, of his German given name Gottlieb (which he also rarely if ever used). Published by Sam Wibowo (A0.1030368). Moles is a 4 minute string quartet which roots from two main concepts: (More famously,) Bach’s and Shostakovich’s musical cryptography and Elgar’s enigma. Hence, the name of the work is something to only be understood by the composer. The main harmonic motif comes from SA(MU)E(L) (WI)B(OWO) which then equates to E-flat, A, E-natural and B-flat which enharmonically become notes of two diminished chords. This motific process has also been done for 4 other people, which is to remain unknown. The development and the interaction between each motif represent and symbolise personal stories along with its rhythmic, harmonic, and expressive aspects such as bar numbers, inversions of chosen chords, and expression markings. The harmonic material throughout the work remains unstable, struggling to find functioning consonance. On the other hand, the rhythmic framework remains fairly stable and metrically comfortable, compensating for the instability of the harmonic material. Insight into the first 19 bars: The opening can be seen to canonically imitate, stating the main harmonic motif (E-flat, A, E-natural and B-flat) throughout the 4 string instruments. Each 5 roman numerals introduce each inversion, since 4 more inversions can fit into an octave before completing the cycle. Furthermore this represents the other 4 people in the piece all linking back to me, calming the rhythmic and harmonic variety through the gradual making of the chord: E-flat, E-natural, B-flat and A.

This work was written in 1999 for an international competition for quartets reflecting in music the visions in three of Edvard Munch's paintings. It is dedicated to the composer's wife, Rayna. 1. The Scream - Moderato - There are 51 versions of The Scream and the movement is in 51 sections grouped roughly into sonata form. The development is largely textural, and the movement hinges about a chord formed of open fifths a major third apart which will also re-appear in the other movements to give the quartet its sense of unity. The screaming is both audible and silent, and the footsteps on the bridge are portrayed both in a sense of passing by and also of running away. 2. Melancholy - Andante - Munch gave other titles to this painting, namely Jappe by the Shore and Jealousy . As jealousy and melancholy are retrospective emotions, tonal and modal music is employed, using the Norwegian folk song Millom bakkar og berg ut met havet set in a minor key for the first section. The A-B-A form then partially loses tonality for Jealousy, while returning to it for Melancholy itself. 3. The Dance of Life - Allegro - This movement is in rondo form, with hints of Norwegian country dances for the dancers in the painting. The two women are portrayed as one looking nostalgically to the light-heartedness of the old waltz and the other brooding on the darkness and latent sexuality of the new tango, the melodies for both of which are also corruptions of the country dances. The Munch chord alters the perspective on the scene as the movement progresses and eventually dissolves at the end as though the onlooker is passing on to another, equally unresolved future. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869862). Dmitri Shostakovich wrote 15 string quartets. As a tribute to him and his glorious music, my 15th string quartet is dedicated to his memory. The first movement takes on a theme that Dmitri Shostakovich has used many times in his music, especially in his String Quartet No. 8 - the DSCH theme. Bach actually came up with the idea. In his Art of the Fugue, the letters in his name Bach is translated to the musical notes: Bb, A, C and B-natural. Dmitri did the same, but in his case the notes are D, Eb, C and B. My first movement begins with the 2nd violin playing an inversion of the DSCH theme: Eb, D, B and C. Then the 1st violin enters with the original DSCH, which is eventually followed by the viola playing the same DSCH theme, but submerged in a fog of harmony. The cello plays a pedal D … for Dimitri. The idea for the second movement Serenade came from his SQ15, second movement, where the 2nd violin and the viola play a fortissimo quadruple stop pizzicati. I coopted his 8-note chord but used only 6 of them for the ostinato pattern in my movement. Incidentally, the publisher forgot to add an alto clef for the viola part … The third movement in the Nocturne is a Largo in 5/4 that features the cello and the 1st violin. It has nothing to do with DSCH’s music, except for the title. The fourth movement is Intermezzo. Both this title and the previous Nocturne are from his SQ15. But the motivic idea is actually something I stole from his SQ4, third movement. In his case it is a repeated C and G in the 2nd violin and viola in 4/4 meter. I kept the repeated G in the 2nd violin, but I altered the viola part and changed the meter to 3/4. It doesn’t sound like DSCH at all. The fifth movement theme is also an idea I grabbed from his SQ4, second movement: A dyad of F and Ab in 3/4, repeated, in an andante movement. I used the same dyad, F and Ab, but slowed it down to a 6/4 and titled it Trauer-Marsch as DSCH did for the fifth movement of his SQ15. The idea for my sixth movement is stolen from DSCH’s SQ2, third movement, which is titled Valse. The 2nd violin and viola play a persistent pah-pah of the usual Oom-pah-pah of a fast waltz. That is what I used (not an uncommon device in all waltzes), but I altered the top line to something more interesting that just repeating the same notes. His waltz begins in Eb minor, but mine is in the relative major of Gb. The last movement is the Epilogue, as it is in DSCH’s SQ15. The only thing I borrowed from his epilogue is the opening chord of an Eb minor triad. The music that follows has nothing to do with DSCH.
