September 11, 2001 has had a profound affect on many people, not the least of which is the composer of this work. Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Originally written for SATB chorus and strings, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. In this setting a string quartet plays what was originally the choral part. It can also be played by a fuller ensemble creating a double string orchestra arrangement. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the quartet and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes with an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered as a choral work in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11. Contains full score and parts.

Playing ‘cello in a Carol concert makes me want to cry. That is why I have created arrangements of classic Christmas Carols and Songs guaranteed not to bore the pants off your violist or ‘cellist. No more bashing out bass notes for the ‘cello, and no more chugging away on the off-beat for viola while the fiddles get soaring melody after soaring counter-melody. We deserve more than this, right guys? You got it! This arrangement of 'White Christmas’ for string quartet stays true to the spirit of the original Bing Crosby version with respect both melody and harmony. Beginning with those unmistakeable 4 chords in the upper strings, the ‘cello takes the majority of the vocal line, but all three other parts are also given a chance to shine with melody, counter melody and harmony by turns. With high positions in both violin parts and up to 4th position plus harmonics for the lower strings, the challenge in this arrangement is found in the technical and musical interpretation of this iconic song, and is a great play for ensembles of advanced intermediate standard. Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for strings are conceived specifically with the aim of writing interesting parts for all players. Most parts do not go beyond 4th position (with the exception of a few harmonics in the lower string parts, and some higher positions in the violin parts), making them suitable for advanced student and mixed ability groups. We hear it in shops, supermarkets, and radio stations all over the country for the weeks in the run up to the celebrations, as it is part of a popular compilation of hits. It was a Christmas number one in 1973 and stayed there for nine weeks. Although it was recorded in New York it is not so well known in the USA which is a surprise to me. I have always loved it because of the unusual chord progressions at the end of the Chorus, and because Noddy Holder is from the West Midlands where I was born and bred. We don’t have too many famous people from around there!It is important to keep a steady tempo but it doesn’t need to be as fast as the original (120 bpm) However It *is* in the same key as the original and follows the structure exactly, so it may be possible to play along with it before coming to rehearsal, which is always helpful. It is useful to feel the syncopation that way. We planned to record this last March but that was before Lockdown!The tune is shared between first violin, viola and cello. The second violinist needs to keep a rock steady pulse. Although it is suitable for a professional quartet to play, and the first violinist often plays the tune up an octave, I feel that it is easy enough for a quartet of Grade 5 ABRSM to play with a few modifications such as playing open strings. The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position and to stretch for the F sharps on the C string, but feel free to change the octaves or use pizzicato in the bass part if it makes things easier.The bowing is a guide only, based on the rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet, so all players should take as many bows as they need in order to feel comfortable. Unlike much of what you'll find out in the world of cheap gig music, this was in fact written BY a string player who has played in symphony orchestras, rock bands, and everything in between; who knows what gigging as a quartet looks like, but also what will wow your audiences without requiring weeks of rehearsal to prepare. So leave your days of sight-reading through piano scores behind and give your quartet some firepower with this hard hitting chart, that will surely enable your ensemble to do at least a little justice to this legendarily emotional banger from Ireland's finest! Bono's soaring vocal melodies on this tune offer more than enough material on their own to tug at an audience's heartstrings, but in this chart you'll also find faithful adaptations of the iconic guitar & bass parts (performed by cello & viola) that truly make this song one of a kind. Using extended string techniques like chopping & strum bowing, you'll feel as if you're rocking out with the band... with no need to hire those annoying extra musicians. But as we all know, strings have much more to offer dynamically than simply plodding along mimicking a rock band, so I've taken several select moments in this chart to break away briefly from those driving grooves into more open, contemplative textures, truly allowing this instrumentation to shine in its own unique way. All of that said, maybe rhythmic string playing isn't your thing and you just need a chart that classical string players can read through on a cocktail gig where the buyer clearly doesn't pay attention to the lyrical content of their song requests. If that's the case, I've provided a couple alternate figures at the back of the book that can be used to replace the percussive stuff in the viola part, making it much simpler without sacrificing too much of the energy. OR if you want to go even further, maybe you DO want to hire that band after all so you can just relax and play some melody lines. Lucky for you I have included a rhythm section lead sheet as part of the music packet, so that any auxiliary musicians you want to add in will be able to follow along with ease.
